Black Darter (NA: Black Meadowhawk), Sympetrum danae,
range and status: circumboreal, ranging to Japan and across North America. generally common even abundant on many acidic waters, more local and confined to higher altitudes (Pyrenees, Alps) towards the south. Prone to wander and may accompagny invasions of other Sympetrum species.
habitat: mostly acidic waters, such as bogs, moorland and heathy waters, but also breeds in small tarns, drying ponds and ditches.
flight season: from mid-june to early november.
