[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
the Black-tailed Skimmer Orthetrum cancellatum
Well distributed, has benefited from the gravel pits and grazing by cattle which creates bare ground. Only recorded at standing water bodies.


Spotting: Often confused with the Broad-bodied Chaser, the Black-tailed Skimmer is characterised by a blue abdomen in the males with a black tip, orange patterns down the sides and a lack of basal black markings on the hind wings. The confusion with the Broad-bodied Chaser is often made over the colouration, but when observed in their respective habitats, there are clear differences.


This species favours sites with bare, trampled ground. When hunting, they make skimming flights over water, very close to the surface and will clash with other males where their territories meet. They can often be observed flying vertically upwards when "fighting" other males.

Females are seen less often, preferring to spend their time in fields and areas away from the water. Their yellow and black-banding colouration is similar to immature specimens of both sexes, such that it is not reliable to sex an immature in the field.

Yes I ame glad to be back. I was on holyday for three weeks. During those weeks I have chase butterflies, but I had no succes at all. A few little I captured, that was al. Since a few days I am hunting on dragonflies, but it is very differcult to make good relext shots. So I was chasing for photo's and I hope you like this male I captured.

Very nice POV, well composed and good details.
The DOF is little shallow. A bigger f-numer, 5.6 or 8 had give the left wing more details.

Excellent macro Jaap! Very efficient use of DOF and shutter-speed to get this one very sharp handheld..Excellent detail, light and colors. Great work!

Hi Jaap, I like it very much. Great exposure, colour and sharpness. I was going to suggest less DOF to get a blurred BG but I see you used f2.8. Can't get less DOF than that! Anyway, the BG is a really nice one and complements the insect. A really great shot, TFS :)

Wel Jaap, dit is toch een van uw handelsmerken, zo mooi opnieuw, het zijn bijna allemaal juweeltjes, en blijkbaar heeft u uw nieuwe camera duidelijk onder controle want het bwijs staat hier voormij, en de kleuren zijn ook zo mooi.
Ik heb al een aantal malen geprobeerd om dergelijke libellen te fotograferen maar ze laten mij gewoon de kans niet, de deugnieten!!!

The Carp beat me. :) :) Couldn't hang on, they got off everytime. O well.

Areal beauty Jaap - nice and clear all over. The background is a little disorderly but one can not always get it the way one want with these guys. Colours are great and very naturaly and the dof is spot on with plenty of details. The composition is very good.
