The classification of the individual heron/egret species is fraught with difficulty, and there is still no clear consensus about the correct placement of many species into either of the two major genera, Ardea and Egretta. Similarly, the relationship of the genera in the family is not completely resolved. For example, the Boat-billed Heron is sometimes classed as a heron, and sometimes given its own family Cochlearidae, but nowadays it is usually retained in the Ardeidae.

Although herons resemble birds in some other families, such as the storks, ibises and spoonbills, they differ from these in flying with their necks retracted, not outstretched. They are also one of the bird groups that have powder down.

An excellent portrait of this haughty looking bird - it looks quite different to the grey herons we have here in the UK, and I'm guessing it's not a native bird in Holland either, judging by the fact that you took it in a safari park!
It's very well taken - perfect focus and the neutral background works well.
Excellent work Annick!

Cheers,
Ben

Hello Annick,
I have a soft spot for Herons and this one is particularly beautiful. Excellent close capture showing great sharpness and fabulous natural colours. It looks really good against that dark background.
Many thanks and cheers, Ulla

Nice portrait of the biggest heron in the world.
Pic is truly sharp and naturally saturated.

The English name's the same - Goliath Heron. Never heard of that subspecies before - most be an impressive bird - 4-5 ft high makes it the largest heron I know of. I would have bet on it being a purple Heron...
Good capture - great detail in the plumage.
Well done! Cheers, Klaus
PS: for your reference - here's a headshot of the Great Blue Heron

Hi Annick

I admit I love to watch herons fish with their slow deliberate movements. This is a really beautiful image with wonderful colour tones, sharp details and perfect framing. DOF, Exposure and lighting are all spot on

Hi Annick,
great shot the details and colors are fabulous.
Looks huge from this POV, and the lighting brings out the rich colors of the plumage very well.
Very nice work.
