Anax imperator

Dutch name: Grote keizerlibel
French name: Anax empereur

The Emperor Dragonfly is a large and powerful species of European hawker dragonfly of the family Aeshnidae, averaging 78mm in lenght

Males have a sky blue abdomen marked with a diagnostic black dorsal stripe and an apple green thorax. Females have a green thorax and abdomen. The male is highly territorial, and difficult to approach. The species lives by larger ponds, gravel pits, and slow rivers.

This large, powerful Dragonfly is one of the biggest species in Europe. The frequently fly high up into the sky in search of prey, which includes Butterflies to Four-spotted Chasers, small prey is eaten on the wing. The females lay the eggs into plants such as pondweed, and always lay alone.
The Emperor Dragonfly spends a year in the aquatic nymph stag, but only about 10 days in the air breathing stage. In both stages it lives primarily on other insects such as Damsel Flies and their nymphs. The adult males participate in aerial dofights for territory, some of which end in death for one of the combatants.

Without flash, ISO 200. I have also tried the flash (see WS) but the result was not good. The Dragonfly was in the shadow of the leaves.

salut Marie Christine,
belle macro de cette grosse libellule, la plongée est efficace. Bons détails et couleurs naturelles, le bg est juste un peu distrayant pour l'oeil.

Hello Marie,
I agree this image is far superior to the workshop. The colors maybe subdued somewhat but the image is far more natural here. Great job marie.

Hello Mariki,
You were lucky to make such a fine capture of the Blue Emperor while it is resting. It is rare in Sweden and the only shot of it that I have taken is an in-flight!
Great POV and sharpness that makes it show well against the busy green BG.
TFS this beauty,
Ivan

Hello Marie Christine,
I'm probably not the best person to comment on macro work, I've never tried it and don't even own a macro lens! However, I think this is a great image, the exposure looks perfect, lovely light, detail is very good and you chose a very good POV, at eye level and allowing the wings from tip to tip to be in focus. A very nice piece of work. Kind regards, Adrian

Hi Mariki,

A beautiful shot of this big beautiful insect, good and sharp and a nice composition.

Thanks,
John

Through some freak chance, I had found a Vagrant Emperor dragonfly in my school compound in Riyadh last year, Marie. It was night time and it was hovering on a light. We grabbed it and placed it against an artificial plant and then I took many pictures. You can see it here.
.
Your Emperor is sticking to a branch in a lush green environment. The eye level capture is very sharp with precise details and natural colours. Despite the dappled light, you have managed a wonderful shot.
Thanks and regards.

Hi Marie,
Wonderful shot of this beautiful dragonfly and it really looks like an Emperer of sorts. Very impressive colours and details and among the dark surrounding it stands out elegantly. Nice pose captured with percise DOF and a well chosen POV. Very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.
