Last week I visited a Zoo in Rhenen (Holland)and I was really impressed bij the mandrils. This capture shows a big male, the leader of the gang. I observed this monkey for about two hours and was lucky to see him yawning. He only did this twice in two hours time so I guess I was a bit lucky.

The mandril is a primate of the Cercopithecidae family, closely related to the baboons and even more closely to the Drill. Both the mandril and the Drill were once classified as baboons in genus Paio, but recent research has determined that they should be seperated into their own genus, Mandrillus. The mandrill is world's larges species of monkey. The word mandrill means "man-ape".

The mandrill is recognized by its olive-colored fur and the colorful face of males, a coloration that grows stronger with sexual maturity; females have duller colors. This coloration becomes more pronounced as the monkey becomes excited and is likely to be an example of sexual selection. The coloration on the rump 9is thought to enhance visibility in the thick vegetation of the rainforest and aids in group movement.
Male can weight up to 60 lb (30 kg), females about half as much. They can grow to be 1 m. long and can survive up to 25 years in captivity. Females reach sexual maturity at about 3.5 years.
The mandrill is found in the tropical rainforests of southern Cameroon, Gaon, Equatorial Guinea and Congo.
