Practicing with lighting I took this picture under difficult lighting conditions at a bird zoo. I was amazed how close the bird stayed. The flash light didnt seem to impress.
Maybe the lighting on the beak is too much. I tried to change it but didnt succeed.
Anyway thanks to Crissy its a black stork, we're looking forward to make the Netherlands its habitat but for now we have sometimes luck of spotting them once in a while when they are of track.

Suggestions on lighting conditions are very welcome. Reina

Dag Reina.

Superb shot Reina!
The stork looks great. Picture has very good details, perfect framing and great colours. I like pictures with dark BG a lot. As for the lighting. I heard many times that it's difficult to take well exposed picture of a bird with both very dark and bright feathers. Here the whites look a bit overburned.
Anyway, I like the picture very much.
WELL DONE!

Genoeg over mij.

Hi Reina

Beautiful close portrait. Good POV, nicely composed and very sharp. TFS.

Hi Reina,
Good detail and colours. Great POV and sharpness.
Nicely composed and good exposure.
Thanks for posting.
Have a good week. I hope you had a good Christmas and New Year.

Hi Reina,
Excellent portrait on this Black Stork. The composition and framing look great. The exposure looks to be spot on here. Very nice colors, and good detail in the black plumage. Well done!
Scott

Beautiful composition of this stork Reina, the exposure is very nice, I think if you had stepped down on your exposure you might of lost some of the dark details but I think you made a wise decision on your choice. :)

Hi Reina,
A nice portrait of this black stork.
Flash light is well balanced, but I agree with you that the light on the beak could be somewhat less. The light spot in the eye of the bird is perfect.
Very well done, regards, Ruud

Hi Reina,
Excellent shot with perfect exposure and lighting.
TFS!

Hi Reina,

You're right, the lighting on the beak is a bit much and over-exposed white areas where is naturally lost the details.
I'm not agree to using a flash at a zoo. In my opinion, it's not good idea. Because, I think sometimes it chage the colours and always some areas in the picture will be over-exposed with the birds or animals who has a contrast colors.

So, I suggest you to using a tripod at the condition under wich you have a difficult lighting.

When you go at a zoo, don't forget to bring your tripod! Prepare your tripod and wait until the bird takes the position that you want, so shot it.
It's important to be patient for taking a good image.

I hope it's comprehensible my write, because I have problem with english.

Hello Reina,
Nice bird portrait. Excellent composition. Good sharpness. Very good eye.

Great image, Reina. I love the composition. Very difficult to photograph subjects with a lot of white and black. The exposure meter of the camera becomes completely confused!!

Very good sharpness, detail, colors and light Reina. This dark BG really does the trick here also. Well composed & excellent post processing. Very well done.
Thank You!

Hi Reina, lovely portrait. The details are excellent and it's a great composition. The lighting is good overall. I would suggest making a tighter crop to cut out the white in the bottom left as that white patch draws the eye in competition with the head and eyes of the bird.

Very well done.

Hello Reina,

Lovely capture of this amazing stork.

I find no problem with the lighting, however, I have heard of diffusers which will help with this kind of situation.

One TN member even makes his own with some plastic wrap, I believe.

Beautiful composition, details, colors and BG.

Thank you for sharing it with us.

Dag Reina
You ask for advice on lighting, but maybe you are the one who should be giving it. This is an excelent shot with the very sharp black bird standing out very well on the black BG. Good detail on the feathers, and although the white area has burnt out somewhat it is not distracting. A good composition and cropping. Well done & TFS.
Regards
Loot

PS. The tri-pod, difuser, and patience are all sound advice for this situation. If you have not done so yet you will surely gain the benefits when you do.

TFS!

Groet,
Pieter
