The Rainbow Lorikeet, Trichoglossus haematodus is a species of Australasian parrot found in Australia, eastern Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. In Australia, it is common along the eastern seaboard, from Queensland to South Australia and northwest Tasmania. Its habitat is rainforest, coastal bush and woodland areas. The taxonomy is disputed, and it is often split into several species (see Taxonomy).

Rainbow Lorikeets have been introduced to Perth, Western Australia, Auckland, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

Description
Rainbow Lorikeets grow to 25-30 cm (9.8-11.8 in) in size, with a wingspan of about 17 cm (6.7 in) and vary significantly in colouration between the numerous subspecies. Their eponymous markings of the best known subspecies moluccanus are particularly striking: A dark blue or violet-blue head and stomach, a bright green back, tail and vent, and an orange breast and beak. Several have darker scalloped markings across the orange or red breast and the Weber's Lorikeet is predominantly green.

Diet
Rainbow Lorikeets feed mainly on pollen and nectar, and possess a tongue adapted especially for their particular diet. The end of the tongue is equipped with a papillate appendage adapted to collecting nectar from flowers. They are also frequent visitors at bird feeders that supply lorikeet-friendly treats, such as store-bought nectar, sunflower seeds, and fruits such as apples, grapes and pears.

Reproduction
In Australia, breeding usually occurs during spring (September to December), and mated pairs typically nest in eucalypt tree.

De Lori van de Blauwe Bergen (Trichoglossus haematodus moluccanus) is een Regenboog-lori die vanwege zijn mooie kleuren vrij geliefd is als huisdier. De soort komt oorspronkelijk uit zuidoost Azië.

Uiterlijke kenmerken: De Lori van de Blauwe Bergen is een mooie, felgekleurde vogel. De kop is felblauw met een oranjeachtige snavelkleur. De borst is oranje en de buik weer blauw. De rug en nek is groen. Ze worden ongeveer 30 cm groot. Geslachtonderscheid is niet te zien, en kan alleen via endoscopisch- of chromosomen onderzoek bekend worden.

Voedsel: er is speciaal Lori voer, omdat deze dieren gewent zijn om alleen maar fruit, nectar en bloesem te eten. Wat weke insecten en zachte zaden kunnen soms ook, maar als hoofdvoeding hebben ze echt vruchten nodig.

Gedrag: het zijn actieve en nieuwsgierige vogels. Als ze vanaf jonge leeftijd bij mensen zijn kunnen ze erg tam worden, maar het blijven zeer luidruchtige vogels. Het liefst worden ze in een paartje gehouden. Ook nemen ze graag regelmatig een waterbad. Het zijn drukke vogels die graag klimmen en knagen, ook zullen ze snel om aandacht gaan roepen.

Very colorful presentation. Use of flash has enhanced the color saturation. The perch is nice and along with the out-of-focus branch at the back adds interest to the picture.

What a pictorial, full of fantastic vibrant colours picture. Captured scene is amazing as well as the POV, framing and composition. Details of the birds and leaf are terrific. Flash light is precise and so impressive. My compliments and best wishes.

Hallo Thijs,
Zo, dus je hebt ze ook gevoerd in de bewuste hal. Ik heb daar ook een paar foto's gemaakt en in TN gezet. Door hun kleuren trekken ze altijd veel aandacht. De contrasterende kleuren in de vogels zijn in deze foto wel erg groot. Waarschijnlijk door het gebruik van je flits. Prachtige pose en schitterende compositie met die doorns op de voorgrond.
