The Sunbittern, Eurypyga helias is a bittern-like bird of tropical regions of the Americas, and the sole member of the family Eurypygidae (sometimes spelled Eurypigidae) and genus Eurypyga.

The Sunbittern is normally found near wooded streams or creeks at elevations of up to 900 m. It hunts fish and other small vertebrates much in the same way as herons do. The bird has a generally subdued coloration, with fine linear patterns of black, grey and brown. Its remiges however have vividly-colored middle webs, which with wings fully spread show bright eyespots in red, yellow, and black. These are shown to other sunbitterns in courtship and threat displays, or used to startle potential predators. Like some other birds, the Sunbittern has powder down. ( Powder down is a special type of down feathers. They occur in a few groups of apparently unrelated birds and thus are probably evolutionary homoplasies. These down feathers differ from the usual down as they are exceptionally fine and produce a dust between the frons. The bird takes this dust from its powder down feathers and coats all its external feathers with the dust.)

The domed nest is built in a tree. Two grey eggs are normally laid.

The Sunbittern is usually placed in the Gruiformes, but this was always considered preliminary. In some aspects of its morphology the Sunbittern is close to the herons and their relatives (which include bitterns), but this appears to be convergent evolution due to similar lifestyles. Altogether, the bird is most similar to another enigmatic bird provisionally placed in the Gruiformes, the Kagu. Molecular studies (e.g. Fain & Houde 2004) seem to confirm that the Kagu and Sunbittern are each other's closest living relatives. They are probably not Gruiformes (though the proposed Metaves are just as weakly supported). Altogether, the two species seem to form a minor Gondwanan lineage which possibly also includes the extinct adzebills and/or the mesites, and is of unclear relation to the Gruiformes proper. Notably, the Kagu and mesites also have powder down.

Hi Peter,
This one comes with fantastic clarity and sharpness, a very fine image with a PoV that highlights the colourful plumage of this bird.I find the concentrated groupings of colour combinations and patterns on its plumage and tail end quite interesting ....that red eye is like ruby placed there...the natural environment aorund adds to the beauty of the scene.
Well done.

Hi Peter.
What a wonderful shot and great quality of it. I am impressed a lot. Pictured scene is amazing, reproduction of the bird and rocks, BG and nice green leaves as a FG are outstanding. Brilliant work. Bravo.
Alexei.

Hi Peter,
very clear and well isolated presentation in a well composed image, subtle colours of a broad spectre of different hues.
Pleasant natural settings. Thank you!
With best regards,
Peter

Try as I might Peter, I cannot be as sharp so often as most such as yours here...An editorial photographer is always ready for the unexpected. nature is only a few months over a year to me...and I still learn from you and others in images such as this. And I am always surprised at the new varieties , angles and such. Very nice image Peter.

Hello Peter,
This is a beautiful capture of a Sun-bittern, a species rarely seen photographed. This shot is technically superb, including the BG and lighting, The composition and POV are also great, all of which contribute to a top image and make me go against my personal rule of avoiding photos of animals and birds taken in captivity. But one has to make an exception sometimes!
TFS.
Have a good weekend,
Ivan

Despite the bird and the BG being predominantly of the same shade of grey, the subject stands out beautifully in this sharp and crisp picture, Peter.
A well edited and artfully presented composition.
TFS and regards.
