Nycticorax nycticorax (black-crowned night-heron)- Kwak (Immature)
Adult:
Red eyes, legs yellow
Black bill
Black crown and back
White face, throat, foreneck, chest and belly
Blue-gray wings
Two long, white, filamentous plumes extending from back of head in alternate plumage
Juvenile:
Eyes yellowish to amber, legs dull greyish
Yellow base to bill
Brown head, neck, chest and belly streaked with buff and white
Wings and back darker brown with large white spots at the tips of the feathers; spots especially large on the greater secondary coverts
Immature:
Acquires full adult plumage in its third year
First year birds are similar to juvenile, but have less extensive spotting on upperwings and a dark cap
Second year birds resemble the adult, but have a brown neck and wings contrasting with darker brown cap and back
This specie is rare in Holland. I took this picture in Noorden nearby the Nieuwkoopse plassen. This is an area with a lot of swamps, lakes and peat areas. Something more about the bird.
Habitat
The black-crowned night heron lives in fresh and saltwater marshes, swamps, lakes and wooded streams.
Diet
The black-crowned night heron hunts for food in the early morning hours and at dusk. It stands and waits for prey like frogs and fish to pass by and them snatches them up with its bill. It sometimes raids the nests of other herons and birds and steals the chicks. It also eats amphibians, crustaceans, insects and small mammals.
Hope you like it!!!

Hi Chris,
What a cute pose for this juvenile heron. There is a lot of dynamism in his crouch. The details are very sharp and the light is good. My only nit is the small black patch in the lower right hand corner. I did a workshop for you to cut it out. Hope you like it. : )

Great capture! With those feet and that pose, he gives mute testimony to the idea that birds are descended from dinosaurs.
