The Silvery-cheeked Hornbill is a large sized bird, with length between 75 to 80 cm, characterized by a very large creamy casque on the beak, smaller in females. The head is silver-grey and the rest of the plumage is black, except for a broad white stripe in the back. The Silverycheeked hornbills are uncommon localized residents of the tall evergreen forests of eastern Africa, from Ethiopia to South Africa. In Zimbabwe they are threatened by habitat destruction. Usually they live in pairs and sometimes roost in flocks of hundreds of individuals. This hornbill feeds on fruits, insects, other birds eggs and centipedes. They breed in Spring (September and October) and lay clutches of 1 to 3 white eggs, hatched for 40 days. The young remain with both parents for circa 80 days.

Hi Annick,
A really weir specimen here!
It's amazing the upper part of the beak, and the way it goes back and form part of the head...
Is this the real appearance of all members of this species, or may be it is a kind of deformation?
Stunning the texture of that beak, it resembles wood!
Very interesting capture, thanks for share and best regards,
JM

Hello Annick.

Excellent picture, very good details and colors.

Hi Annick

Thanks for introducing me to this species. I have never seen this one before...and I really thought I’ve got photos of every kind of hornbill there is to be found, but somehow I have missed this one. Just shows again that there is always one more which one have not seen or do not know about.

This is a lovely portrait. You managed to capture this bird in a beautiful composition showing great colours and with excellent facial details all around. That little black eye is alive and shows a good proportion of reflected light. The BG is superb and the exposure was spot-on. The great usage of available light really placed this photo in a qualitative ‘upper class’ as far as the aspect of contrast is concerned.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards

Hi Annick

This is a fantastic capture!
The pose of this impressive hornbill and the POV here are jusy Excellent!
They really show exactly how big that beak really is! ;)
Also the details are very neat and sharp and the natural colors look great.
A very beautiful photo, considerring the bad condition in which it was taken.

Cheers and TFS

Hi Annick.
Next your wonderful portrait work despite bad light condition. I like how you managed to create sharp and perfect details shot at these parameters of exposure. Cute bird, excellent composition and framing. Blurriness and colorfulness of the BG are very nice too. My compliments and best wishes.
Alexei.
