Speckled Pigeon

he Speckled Pigeon (Columba guinea) is a pigeon which is a resident breeding bird in much of Africa south of the Sahara. It is a common and widespread species in open habitats over a good deal of its range, although there are sizeable gaps in its distribution.

This species builds a large stick nest in a tree and lays two white eggs. Its flight is quick, with the regular beats and an occasional sharp flick of the wings which are characteristic of pigeons in general.

This is a large pigeon at 41cm in length. Its back and wings are rufous, the latter heavily speckled with white spots. The rest of the upperparts and underparts are blue-grey, and the head is grey with red patches around the eye. The neck is brownish, streaked with white, and the legs are red. The call is a loud doo-doo-doo.

Sexes are similar, but immatures are browner than adults.

The Speckled Pigeon is frequently seen around human habitation and cultivation. Most of its food is vegetable, and it gathers in large numbers where grain or groundnuts are available.(wiki)

hi annick
fantastique prise, l'effet piquant est très réussi, associé avec un contraste de couleurs fort.
Pour être puriste, il manque de la netteté sur le bec et côté gauche de la tête.
superbe.

Hola Annick, como siempre espectacular, precioso retrato y magnífica presentación, felicidades... saludos

Hi again, Annick:
If you haven't found it yet, it's the Speckled Pigeon Columba guinea, also known as the Guinea Pigeon, Hackled Pigeon or Red-eyed Pigeon. You're making ID a real challenge with the head-only shots, but this species is quite distinctive ;) Another trademark portrait!
Best wishes, Nigel.

Hi Annick

Wow, great plumage details. Love the head shot. These are my favourite. Nice work. TFS.

Hello Annick,
Great feather detail, exceptional color and beautiful closeup composition.
Rick

I guess there is a reason that that lens has such a good reputation...it's earned it. Do you find it a little too heavy to carry for a hike etc? I probably have to stick with my slower lenses.

Nice work and TFS

Evelynn : )

Nice shot of this Rock Pigeon (columba guinea) also called speckled pigeon.
Great eye details and colord.
Nice texture of the plumage.

Hey Annick,
This is another portrait that shows the Vanderschelend’s own style again :) Couldn’t your parents found an easier name to write than : Vanderscheleden!!! We never know where to place the "s,ch,etc." :)

Details, composition, colors are amazing. Well done again with a very strange looking pigeon ;)

Hi Annick.
I like your brilliant portrait work so much. You have selected model for shooting excellently. It is very nice and unusual. Your cropping is very good. Colours, sharpness and details are simply perfect as well as the colour tone and blurriness of the BG. My congratulations and TFS.
Alexei.

Is this bird on a wire Annick?
Because he looks wired to me :)
Nice work.

Hi Annick,

Hi Annick,
Another beautiful portrait, technically very good though the beak looks a little soft, mabe the gloss on the beak. The eye with the red patch around it is all absorbing.

Hi Annick

Wow, this portrait of the speckled pigeon is simply amazing. It is so close-up and ‘in-your-face’ that it could almost qualify for macro work.

The wet bird looks absolutely stunning on this shot. Especially since the fine neck feathers matted together which created a very interesting effect. The composition is good and the colours are splendid. The details are smashing and that remarkable eye is so life-like. Obviously the perfect BG does its fair share to even enhance the bird further and the spot-on exposure rounded of to do the rest.

Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

PS. Sorry I took so long to update my critique, but I don’t know what’s going on here in South African. For the second time this week more than ½ of the country had a total black-out that lasted almost 7 hours. After the power was restored the Internet still remained unavailable and I don’t know what time last night it came back on-line, but at least this morning everything seems to be fine again.
