[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Check my other pictures concerning this shooting for place and weather and so forth. The latter was very unpredictable. Rain, sun, cloudy, cold,...that kind of stuff.
Here apparently the sun came through...high contrast in generally spoken low light conditions makes it a bit (read: too much) underexposed in the shadows. Gert already critiqued that one.
On the other hand and to continue my critique on my pic, I find the rather strong light and BG attractive.

The Grey Crowned Crane (Balearica regulorum) is a bird in the crane family Gruidae. It occurs in dry savannah in Africa south of the Sahara, although it nests in somewhat wetter habitats.

There are two subspecies. The East African B. r. gibbericeps (Crested Crane) occurs from eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo through Uganda, of which it is the national bird, and Kenya to eastern South Africa. It has a larger area of bare red facial skin above the white patch than the smaller Balearica regulorum regulorum (South African Crowned Crane) which breeds from Angola south to South Africa.

This species and the closely related Black Crowned Crane are the only cranes that can roost in trees, because of a long hind toe that can grasp branches. This habit, amongst other things, is a reason why the relatively small Balearica cranes are believed to closely resemble the ancestral members of the Gruidae.

a nice shot aof this beautiful crane, The hairdo is amazing.
Maybe it's a a bit UE, there is no much details in the black parts. Good details and nice colours.

Hi Annick

The bird that combs its hair with 220 volt. The crowned crane is not called like that for nothing as its name carries a dual purpose IMHO. One, to identify the obvious crown on its head and two, easily the best looking of all cranes giving it the title “Mr. Crane of the world”.

I tend to fancy the darkish outcome of this photo as to me it does not matter that the body was UE. The interesting result as far as the rest is more what captures my liking. The slight backlight made for a wonderful lining of light all around the edges of the crane plus a burst of light on the crown and I think it also aided in enriching the colours. The details are spot-on and the BG is very complimentary.

So, well done and TFS.

This is a splendid portrait of a fantastic bird. I like the lighting and the soft fading colours in the background very much.
The pose of the bird is also very attractive.
It think that the crop makes it even more interesting.
