The Humboldt Penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) is a South American penguin, breeding in coastal Peru and Chile. Its nearest relatives are the African Penguin, the Magellanic Penguin and the Galápagos Penguin. The penguin is named after Alexander von Humboldt, a naturalist and explorer who first described the animal to the scientific community.
Humboldt Penguins are medium-sized penguins, growing to 65-70 cm (26-28 in) long and a weight of 4.7 kg (10.4 lbs). They have a black head with a white border running from behind the eye, around the black ear-coverts and chin, to join on the throat. They have blackish-grey upperparts and whitish underparts, with a black breast-band extending down the flanks to the thigh. They have a fleshy-pink base to the bill. Juveniles have dark heads and no breast-band.
This penguin nests on islands and rocky coasts, burrowing holes in guano and sometimes using scrapes or caves.
The current status of this penguin is vulnerable, due to a declining population caused in part by over-fishing. Historically it was the victim of guano over-exploitation. Penguins are also declining in numbers due to habitat destruction. The current population is estimated at between 3,300 and 12,000.

Ha Peter,

Een goede close up van deze pinguin, alhoewel ik denk als je de f waarde wat vergroot had,de dof wat dieper was geweest en dit de foto had verbeterd, maar nu is het ook een mooie upload, groetjes,

Paul

Hi Peter,

Wonderful close-up of the face of this penguin. The colors, details, and textures are excellent. That is quite a fancy beak.

Very nice portrait Peter
Sharpness and exposure are spot on.
I like the soft darker tones in the background, against wich the head of the penguin does stand out wonderfully, very much.
Would love to have seen a little more front to back sharpness with whole of the bill and head of the bird in sharp focus, and also a little more light in the dark eye to lighten it up a bit.
Very nice image anyway.
Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards, Harry

Hi Peter,
An excellent composition with the frame filling portrait on this Humboldt Penguin. The shallow DOF works well here. Great colors and detail in the face and beak.
Scott

Great detail about the face.

Rob

Hi Peter,
Nice detail in your profile portrait with good color and POV. I think it could use a bit more DOF & space top in the comp.
Some detail was lost in those hightones, not bad though. TFS!
Howard
