Species:
Calendula Officinalis - Marigold - Goudsbloem - Ringelblume - Souci.
The Calendula officinalis is part of the order of Compositae.

History:
The Marigold has since long been used for many purposes, from gardenflower to culinary ingredient to medicine. The Romans thought they bloomed all year, which is how the flower acquired it's name: the Latin name Calendula is derived from the Latin noun Calenda which means "first of the month". The flowers bloomed every first day of the month (thus, all year round).

The ancient Egyptians used the flower in potions and cremes, and praised it for it's rejuvenating aspects. In Europe, it was also used in stews and soups, and also provided a natural dye with which butter and cheese were colored.

In England, the flower became associated with the 17th century Queen Mary, and is thusly called Marigold.

Modern uses:
Brightly colored flowerplant in yellow to darkorange. Used as ingredient for a lightyellow dye. The dried leaves are also used to give a colorful accent to pot-pourries.

Cosmetically, the flower is used in cremes meant to rejuvinate and cleanse the skin.

Medicinal qualities are: antiseptic, anti hemmorhaging, cleansing, detoxing, anti inflammatory, and strenghtens the immune system.
