[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
An immature Oystercatcher in my garden.
A chick crying for his mum and dad. The parents were several minutes gone and left the chick alone in search of food. After 10 minutes it run away to find its parents. It was searching everywhere. At least they were found.

The Eurasian Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus, also known as the Common Pied Oystercatcher, or (in Europe) just Oystercatcher, is a wader in the oystercatcher bird family Haematopodidae. It is the most widespread of the oystercatchers, with three races breeding in western Europe, central Eurasia, Kamchatka, China, and Western coast of Korea. No other oystercatcher occurs within this area.

Family Charadriidae:
A family of birds that includes the plovers, dotterels, and lapwings, about 64 to 66 species in all. They are small to medium-sized birds with compact bodies, short, thick necks and long, usually pointed, wings.

Adult:
Head: black Bill: red-orange Shape: straight Body: Breast: black Underparts: white Upperparts: black Legs: Foot Color: pink Leg Color: pink Tail: white with broad black band.

Size/Age/Growth:
About 16 to 17 inches long, with a wingspan of 30 to 34 inches. Adults weigh about 19.2 ounces.

Distribution
Range and Population
This species has a large range, with an estimated global Extent of Occurrence of 1,000,000-10,000,000 kmē. It has a large global population estimated to be 1,100,000-1,200,000 individuals (Wetlands International 2002). Global population trends have not been quantified, but the species is not believed to approach the thresholds for the population decline criterion of the IUCN Red List (i.e. declining more than 30% in ten years or three generations). For these reasons, the species is evaluated as Least Concern.

Diet
Oyster Catchers eat marine worms and shellfish which they probe for and open with their bills.

Hello Peter,
A great capture of a juvenile Oystercatcher on your lawn. He still has traces of down on him and I like the open bill while he is calling.
Nice lighting, sharpness and low POV and just the right DOF to keep the sharpness to where it is necessary.
TFS this fine image,
Ivan

Hello Peter
It is good to have a garden and even better to have luck and get feather visitors :)
Well done and TFS

Hi Peter,

He looks so cute in this shot. He seems to be very relaxed and not missing his parents. Is he singing or calling for them? Beautiful face with the sparkling eye and orange beak and lovely plummage. I'm sure this family are welcomed tenants.
