[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
In March a pair of Long-tailed Tits was building a nest in a conifer just near to my house. They were busy for a couple of weeks. And then in April the nest was done and it was quiet. Till the end of April. On a mourning I found a totally destroyed nest on the ground. The birds were flying around for a couple of days and then disappeared. I didn’t have seen them again.

The Long-tailed Tit, Aegithalos caudatus, is a very small passerine bird. It breeds in most of Europe and Asia. It is usually a non-migratory species, although there have been several extralimital records, and migration has been observed in north-eastern Europe.
Its family, Aegithalidae, is related to the true tits, and in the winter it is often found with tit flocks.

It is a very small bird at only 13–15 cm in length including its very long tail, which makes up 7–9 cm of the total. The Long-tailed Tit is black and brown above and whitish below, with reddish flanks. It has a white crown. North European birds (A. c. caudatus) have completely white heads and flanks. There are several other subspecies which vary substantially in plumage. Hybridization between subspecies is common, and the hybridization zone between caudatus and europaeus seems to move in an easterly direction.

Long-tailed Tits are found in deciduous woodlands with significant undergrowth. This is a restless species, constantly on the move as it searches for insects and other small food items. During the autumn and winter, it is usually found in flocks of p to thirty individuals; it has been described as an avian sheep.

During the breeding season (late February to July), Long-tailed Tits form monogamous pairs, and raise a single brood of six to twelve eggs in a woven closed nest, often concealed within a tree or shrub. The nest is held together with spider webs, camouflaged with lichen and lined with feathers. Adult male birds will often choose to assist their parents or brothers in raising offspring if their own nest is predated.

The two main calls are a srih-srih-srih, and a churr.

Hi Peter,

I'd like to hear the srih-srih-srih and churr.... It is not easy to get them sitting somewhere. It looks, as if it was a windy day due to its feathers.
It's a pity that the bird is not 100% clear, but colors and presentation great.

Best regards Oki

Ciao Peter, lovely bird in nice pose, fine details, splendid colors, excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Peter,
Sad news, but that's life, I expect the Crows or a Magpie had a nice meal! Lovely capture of this tired-looking parent in a nice pose. I love the look of their eyes. Beautiful light and colours and fine sharp details.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Peter,
A fine capture of a ruffled Long-tailed Tit in a pleasing simple composition against a blue sky.
Your note has a tragic story and i feel that this year many birds have not been able to breed because of the cold late spring and early summer that reduces the insect life.
Thanks and have a good weekend,
Ivan
