pyama glider (Episyrphus balteatus)
This species was first described by Charles de Geer, born Swede who grew up in the Netherlands where his family came from. The more remarkable Dutch name this flight to the image, a yellow ground with a more complex, but regular black drawing lines across the abdomen. It consists of three black bands, with an often interrupted, thinner and somewhat V-shaped mark. The upper band is usually fused with the triangular mark above. The thorax is black brown and shiny, and has a lighter, usually yellow 'knob' on the back. The eyes are red in color and length is 7 to 12 millimeters.
The pajamas glider lives on nectar and pollen of flowers and there are several plant species visited. This species is found in large parts of Europe, but also in North Africa, North America and Asia. In the Netherlands and Belgium, the pajamas glider generally, and is everywhere where flowers and aphids are. This species is very popular in horticulture, because the larvae are voracious predators of aphids. |
