In my garden I got two apple trees. In this time of the year the apples are almost ripe. So I got many visitors. First the Jackdaws came, together with the wasps. Through these Jackdaws many apples are falling. And under the trees a lot of ducks are waiting. They eat the rest of the apples. One of them is this gentleman.
The colours in the BG are waterplants in the ditch.

In my series of ducks this one was still missing.

The Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), probably the best-known and most recognizable of all ducks, is a dabbling duck which breeds throughout the temperate and sub-tropical areas of North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, New Zealand (where it is currently the most common duck species), and Australia. It is strongly migratory in the northern parts of its breeding range, and winters farther south. For example, in North America it winters south to Mexico, but also regularly strays into Central America and the Caribbean between September and May.

The Mallard is the ancestor of all domestic ducks, except the few breeds derived from the unrelated Muscovy Duck (Cairinia moschata).

The Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies to the mallard.

Ecology
The Mallard inhabits most wetlands, including parks, small ponds and rivers, and usually feeds by dabbling for plant food or grazing; there are reports of it eating frogs. It usually nests on a river bank, but not always near water. It is highly gregarious outside of the breeding season and will form large flocks, which are known as a sord.

Hi Peter,

Splendid macro capture of the adorable 'male' Mallard! The sharpness and POV are ideal and the way you positioned the mallard in the frame, is very pleasing! The colors are so real and bright, bring a lot of charm into the shot. The shallow DOF works great here.
Very well done!

thanks and regards,
Paras Bhalla

Hello peter,
An expertly captured male mallard. Great details, colours and beautiful composition.

hallo Peter
Super opname
groetjes lou

Hi Peter. This is a fine close up of the Mallard duck in your garden. You have used the light well which has given bright colours. We can see the feather details so well. You say this is a Male I am not to sure i think its the Female as the male has the green head feathers. But i may be wrong. Well done tFS.

Hi Peter,

Zaius would love your garden!! He sits by the sliding door watching the Quails so I imagine he would love all of your wildlife. This is a wonderful close-up of the Mallard! Excellent colors and marvelous details of the face, eye, beak and plumage. The feathers are fantastic. He seems to be looking at you out of the corner of his eye.

The Mallard is/was and always shall be my favorite of the ducks. I am certain that the reason being my father raised me to appreciate them....yet in an ironic way and twist we also learned that we were the owners of guns...a mixed childhood lesson...but perhaps more of the old way of doing things....in my ancestry there are stories replete with lovers and hunters both together....all the same this is a fine depiction from your end!
Bob
