Photographed in the butterfly house.
The Postman Butterfly (Heliconius melpomene) is one of Heliconiine butterflies found in South America. Several species in the genus have very similar markings and looks and are difficult to distinguish.
Description
The Postman butterfly has large long wings with an orange stripe down each forewing. They tend sometime to look similar to the species Heliconius erato. There are many forms of this butterfly. It is poisonous and has red patterns on its wings. The variation in patterns has been studied using crossing experiments and it has been found that the patterns are associated with a small number of gene loci.
Distribution
The distribution of this butterfly is from Central America to Southern Brazil.
Larva
The caterpillar feeds on passion flower species. In Central America, the host plant is Passiflora oerstedii and Passiflora menispermifolia. In other places they breed on several other Passiflora species.

Lieber Sigfried,
Eigentlich kommentiere ich Bilder aus Zoos und Schmetterlingshäuser nicht, habe mir aber deine Serie angesehen. Es gibt ja wirklich wunderschöne Kreaturen in dieser Welt. Habe mich dennoch für eins Deiner Bilder aus dem Schmetterlingshaus entschieden. Es besticht durch Leichtigkeit,einer wunderschönen vertikalen Komposition und feinen Farben.
Sehr gut gemacht.
