The meerkat or suricate, is a small mammal and a member of the mongoose family, it inhabits all parts of the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. A group of meerkats is called a "mob" or "gang".

Meerkat is an English loan word from the Dutch meaning lake cat. However, the name has been superseded in Dutch by stokstaartje ("little stick- tail"), and the word only kept its original meaning in Afrikaans and English.

The meerkat is a small diurnal herpestid whose weight averages approximately 731 grams (males) and 720 grams (females), with long and slender body and limbs which give it a body length of between 25 and 35 cm and an added tail length of 17-25 cm. Its tail (which is not bushy like all other mongoose species) is long, thin and tapering to a pointed tip which is black or reddish coloured. The meerkat will use its tail to balance when standing vertical.

This shot was taken in the Zoo of Amsterdam called "Artis".

Kia ora Pieter and Sandra, you caught this fellow in a very strange pose - good to see him like this. He is nice and sharp and I love his glare as he surveys his domain. Well done.
And lovely to see you back...

Awesome pose and I love the upward POV. Very good detail and excellent DOF. Backround is perfect.

Great work and TFS

Hello Pieter,
Nice to see a post from you, haven't seen one from you in awhile. Your sentry is nicely placed within the frame and is displaying a quite popular pose that these animals normally do when looking for predators, watching out for the rest of its peers. :)

He's a bit puffy!!

Hi Pieter, interesting shot. Had he been in a tumbledryer? To the hairdresser for a blow dry? Electric shock?

Good shot, I think a portrait mode rather than landscape would have worked better here but apart from that I like it! Well done.

Excellent shot here. The angle you took this at is what really makes this one for me. A unique POV with a good exposure. Some bright light you handled well. Nice detail, and he ie well seperated from the backround.

Bonjour Pieter, splendid photo de Suricate dans une posture trés caractéristique, votre composition est belle ainsi que le detail de la fourrure, félicitations, Didier.

Hi Pieter,
I like the low POV here, it works well. Very well composed with sharp detail, good color and light. I like the BG colors and patterns, they add nicely, without distraction IMHO. Great work!

Pieter, I've never seen one of them.

I like the shot. The low pov makes him look really great and imposing, like a king checking his realm.

The bg is really lovely.

I like composition too.

Congratulations.

Hello Pieter,
Great shot of this meerkat that in fact doesn't look like meerkat. I've never seen one in such pose and with such fluffy fur. It's nice to see something new. I like POV here, but maybe vertical framing would work a little better.
Overall, great post.
WELL DONE!

Absolutely great, Pieter! Excelent capture showing nice sharpness and good colours. Nice POV also!
Cheers!

It's good to see a post from you Pieter,
This has to be the fluffiest meerkat I've ever seen. The light looks rather harsh, and you've handled it very well. The details are sharp and clear, the colours are spot on. The BG is perfect for this capture.
Thanks for posting, have a great week.

Hi Pieter, Hope your keeping well. Great pose you captured here with good light and composition. Nice work.

What a strange pose that is, Pieter. Very funny.
The light on him is very interesting, focused in his tummy.
He looks like he has just had a shampoo. Great details on his fluffy fur. A very cute fellow.
It is great to see you, Pieter. TFS. : )

It's a great result, Pieter.
The detail on the fur looks more soft than it did on the full size image you sent me, but of course, it would do! The colours look perfect now, what WB did you use in the end?
Like others have said, the low POV is good, it makes him look higher up. I wonder if the extra long fur is an adaptation to the Dutch winter?!

Let's hope you get some more photo opportunties soon, eh?

Andy

What a cute little meerkat. I really like the sun on the lower body...too bad he didn't participate with putting his face in the light too, LOL!

Have a good week!

Alli

Hi Pieter,
Excellent shot of this Meerkat, a tricky exposure well managed. Good detail, great POV and colours. Great DOF and I like the background also, nice patterns and interesting colours. I think a tighter crop, still leaving some space to the right could be an alternative approach. Great work.
Regards,
Adrian
