The Common Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus), otherwise known as the Ring-necked Pheasant or Chinese Pheasant is a gamebird in the pheasant family Phasianidae of the order Galliformes, gallinaceous birds. They are native to Asia but have been widely introduced elsewhere, often as a game bird. The specific epithet, colchicus, refers to Colchis, a region in the Caucasus.
The adult pheasant is 50-90 cm in length with a long tail, often accounting for half the total length. The male (cock or rooster) has barred bright brown plumage and green, purple and white markings, often including a white ring around the neck, and the head is green with distinctive red patches. This bird is also called the Common or English Pheasant, or just Pheasant. The males are polygynous and are often accompanied by a harem of several females.

Der Fasan (Phasianus colchicus) ist ein Vogel , der aus Mittelasien stammt, aber schon von den Römern in Europa eingeführt wurde. Er wird gejagt und verspeist. Das Männchen erreicht bis zu 90 cm Länge, das Weibchen ist deutlich kleiner und schlicht gelbbraun gefärbt. Die in Deutschland am häufigsten auftretende Fasanenart ist der Mongolische Ringfasan. Weitere Arten sind der chinesische Ringfasan sowie der ringlose Kupferfasan.
Der Fasan ist ein Bewohner weiter Feldfluren, unterbrochen von Gehölzen oder Wasserläufen, und findet daher in der landwirtschaftlichen Kulturlandschaft ausreichende Lebensräume vor. Fasane leben vorrangig von pflanzlicher Nahrung und zerkleinern diese mit Hilfe von Gastrolithen in ihrem muskulösen Magen.
Fasane leben nicht monogam: Das bedeutet, dass auf einen Hahn 5 bis 6 Hennen kommen (Geschlechterverhältnis 1:6). Bei der Jagd wird bei normaler Population in der Regel nur der Hahn bejagt, um das Geschlechterverhältnis zu gewährleisten. Die bundesweite Jagdstrecke liegt bei einer relativ konstanten Zahl von 350.000 Fasanen/Jahr.
Im Nest am Boden können zwischen 8 bis 15 Eier in der Größe 45,9 x 36,0 mm und im Mai/Juni gelegt werden. Diese sind einfarbig olivbraun. Eiablage erfolgt täglich. Das Eigewicht schwankt zwischen 2,49 bis 3,79 g. Durchschnittswert ist 2,94 g. Brutbeginn ist nach der Ablage des letzten Eies und dauert etwa 22 bis 27 Tage. 14 Tage nach dem Schlupf können die Jungen fliegen. Die Bebrütung erfolgt durch die Henne. Nachgelege sind selten.

This photo was taken in my garden. I was taking pictures of a damselfly when I noticed that I was not alone and this male phaesant was walking trough the bushes. His call gave him away.

Ha Paula,

Ik zie ze hier ook wel eens,maar in het zuiden van zweden en in nederland zag je ze vaker als hier,maar helaas nog niet gelukt om er een op foto te portretteren,hij staat er mooi op maar in deze positie is het vrij moeilijk danwel onmogelijk om de gehele fazant in focus te krijgen,de kleuren en details zijn mooi,groetjes

You have presented this beautiful bird very well. I like its impressive pose, excellent rich colours, [perfect sharpness of the image and superb composition of the shot. May be the top-right corner of the shot is light a bit (for my taste). My compliments and best regards.
