It seems like I am attracted to yellow flowers and in this photo I am not the only one :)

So far most of the flower photos I have posted are yellow. But, soon I hope to be able to present my first wild orchid. I received some directions for a location where they can be found and I am going to find it this sunday.

Back to the photo. It was taken along the river Regge. A smaller river not far away from my house. This particular part of the river is undergoing a huge transition. While most of flow of the river is controlled by human hand, this part is given the freedom to flow as it wants. Resulting in a wonderful habitat for wild flower and animals.

The flower you see here is from the Iris pseudacorus (yellow flag or yellow iris) a species of Iris, native to Europe, western Asia and northwest Africa. It's specific epithet, meaning "false acorus," refers to the similarity of its leaves to those of Acorus calamus, as they have a prominently veined mid-rib and sword-like shape.

It is a herbaceous perennial plant growing to 1-1.5 m (or a rare 2 m) tall, with erect leaves up to 90 cm long and 3 cm broad. The flowers are bright yellow, 7-10 cm across, with the typical iris form. The fruit is a dry capsule 4-7 cm long, containing numerous pale brown seeds.

Iris pseudacorus grows best in very wet conditions, and is often common in wetlands, where it tolerates submersion, low pH, and anoxic soils. The plant spreads quickly, by both rhizome and water-dispersed seed. It fills a similar niche to that of Typha and often grows with it, though usually in less deep water. While it is primarily an aquatic plant, the rhizomes can survive prolonged dry conditions. Yellow iris has been used as a form of water treatment since it has the ability to take up heavy metals through its roots.

Hi Niek

Yellow is definitely attractive :) I remember it was my favorite color as a child :)
This is a splendid shot of this iris and also a lovely story about it and the place where you found it. Sounds like an awesome habitat :D
I really like the simple composition here with the iris (and its little visitors) and only a few leaves. The DOF work is excellent here and it gave you that beautifuly blurry BG.
It's always very tricky to shoot subjects this bright. I also have that problem with some dragonflies with bright blue abdomen. Here too: some petals might be just a little burned in some places, but i'm pretty sure that if you would have turned down the exposure, that lovely BG would have become too dark...as i said: very tricky.
However, i really like the result just how it is :)

Bravo and TFS
Horia

PS: good luck with the orchids sunday! but don't forget to look around them, too. Usually in such places you have the chance to find all sorts of cool things ;)

Nice sunny look here with very good colors..The long green leaves form a great natural border for your iris. The bugs add well also :)

Hi Niek

Great light in this picture. the yellow is very nice and the sharpness excellent, but I think you could have doen much more with the composition. the yellow flower is too central for my tastes...

Were you shooting with -EV? It helps enormously especially with the brighter flowers or when they are in sunlight.

Great use of DOF and sharpness BTW.

I love the color, too. The bugs are a nice touch. I'm always inclinded to rotate these so the stalks are vertical, even if they aren't in nature. Yes, I'm a bit anal. (I'm sure that translates, because Freud was a German-speaker [which is close to Dutch...], right?) I would be tempred to crop a bit from the top, too. And on my monitor the highlights seem blow out. Is there any room in RAW? I always do Emma's (Aramok's) trick, of a exposure correction (In fact I usually leave mine at -.7, my hunch is my D50 isn't calibrated completely correctly, and if I'm shotting with snow in the scene or a bright spot I move it up to -1.0). Boy, that's a lot of nits for a generally solid shot. Maybe I'm just grumpy today.

Hi,

bright vivid colours and light, interesting different shapes and forms, good DOF, beautiful flora and even some fauna - it's got it all. Very well done Niek.

Hi Niek,
that's a pretty shot, I love that yellow lilies, they are also at the lake we are visiting in these days. Excellent sharpness and nice details with the bugs there.
Thanks and greetings

Hi Niek...I'm back for a while : )

Wild yellow iris grow in my area too. I notice them in the low lands. In the mountains we have purple iris. Getting in close is very effective. I really like the straight lines of the leaves contrasted with the curves of the flower. Wonderful sharpness just where it should be...
