Hi all,

This is one of the butterflies that I wanted to see very badly and was able to do that in the butterfly park "Vlinder aan de Vliet" at Leidschendam which was introduced to me by Thijs(PentaxFriend).Here again i used the stand borrowed from Thijs to shoot this. Since this was sitting in a very dark area i had to open the aperture to 5.6!

Greta oto is a brush-footed butterfly, and is a member of the clearwing clade; its wings are transparent. Its most common English name is glasswing, and its Spanish name is espejitos, which means "little mirrors." Indeed, the tissue between the veins of its wings looks like glass. It is one of the more abundant clearwing species in its home range, which extends throughout Central America into Mexico. The opaque borders of its wings are dark brown sometimes tinted with red or orange, and its body is dark in color. Its wingspan is between 5.5 and 6 cm.

Adults inhabit the rainforest understory and feed on the nectar of a variety of tropical flowers. G. oto prefers to lay its eggs on plants of the tropical nightshade genus Cestrum. The silvery-gray caterpillars feed on these toxic plants and store the alkaloids in their tissues, making them distasteful to predators such as birds. They retain their toxicity in adulthood. The same alkaloids that make them poisonous also are converted into pheromones by the males, which use them to attract females.

G. oto adults also exhibit a number of interesting behaviors, such as long migrations and lekking among males.

Hello Goutham!
When I look at this species I really regret that such butterflies do not occur in Europe. Beauty, transparent wingd and vivid colours make this species very attractive (even if there are a lot of more colourful butterflies).
According to technical aspects I like DOF and profile POV. Sharpness is also good. On the other hand I would keep some free space above the butterfly, especially that on both sides there is a lot of it :)

This is so fantastic. Satish did tell me that you shot this beautiful butterfly. The lighting and focus are so perfect. You chose the right Point of view to show that the wings are as clear as glass. Lack of reflections from the wing makes it so beautiful. You had to sacrifice a bit of DOF due to bad lighting as mentioned by you.

Wonderful clarity in the glasses of the wing Goutham.
Sharpness is perfect and color contrast between the orange/brown tones of the wings and green tones in the background are most wonderful.
I'm sorry to tell you, but I'm not that fond on composition.
Cropping on top and lower site are to tight imho.
Would love to have seen this lovely butterfly in an vertical composition with more space on top and lower side.

I too regret that these beautiful butterflies do not occur over here. You have caught this one very well and I would love to see the one in vertical format becuase I really feel that there is a need for a little more space above and below on this one. But otherwise the composition, sharpness and DOF are excellent.

I share your excitement at seeing this unique butterfly with your own eyes, Goutham.
