[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The GUIRA (Guira guira) is a cuckoo related to anis. It is one of the most common birds of Brazil, absent only from the continuous forest of Amazonia.
It has a hirsute orangey crest and measures 40 cm. Like its cousins anis, the guira give off a strong, pungent odour.
Nutrition
The guira feeds on big arthropods, frogs, small birds and small mammals like mice.
Behaviour
The guira goes around on the ground, usually in bands of 6 to 18 individuals, with other birds like the Chalk-browed mockingbird (Mimus saturninus) and the Smooth-billed Ani (Crotophaga ani) whose behaviour is very similar.
They live in groups but have the tendency to form couples.
The nest is built on a tree fork 5 meters from the ground. The eggs (from 5 to 7) are dark green and covered in a layer of limestone. They are incubated either in individual or community nests, in the latter one can find up to 20 eggs. Under community nests there are many broken eggs. The competition between young being great, mortality is important.

This photo is taken in Avifauna Birdpark.
There was heavy, sharp sunshine and I had to blur the BG a lot to make the bird loose from the BG.
I hope you like it.

Very nice image of this cuckoo.
Fine light, focus, and BG is very interesting.

The BG looks manipulated/blured with PS or other program.
Is that true?

Hi Peter.
What an original subject and very nice picture. Light conditions were very complex but you managed to create a perfectly exposed shot despite some OE aria on the bird feathers. Pose of the bird, expression of its "face"> composition of the picture and BG are superb. My compliments and best regards.
Alexei.

Rob

Great shot - I'm however not so sure about the applied postwork, it however well intended does something postwork shouldn't - it becomes visible.

Hi Peter,

A wonderful capture of a magnificent looking bird. I have never seen a Cuckoo - just a roadrunner who is in the Cuckoo family. You caught a wonderful expression on his face! The plummage is fantastic. Beautiful colors and details and a beautiful composition.

Hi Peter,
A very nice and rare bird that we have in good amounts in Argentina. They love sunbath, and maybe here is in that situation. likeable composition, with nice blurred BG. I think lacks a bit of focus in the head, but´s an interesting shot
regards
Hernán
