Hi Martien
Another excellent capture of these fresh water tropical fish and especially so considering that it comes from a scanned photo. A great moment of natural behaviour showing the dwarf's spawning in typical cichlid fashion.
My book "Exotic Tropical Fishes" by Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod & William Vorderwinkler (T.F.H. Publications) still have it as Apistogramma ramirezi however, that seems to be a disused synonym. I tried to do a bit of research on the name, but it ended in a very confusing scramble where every so called authority classified and claimed these fish as a different genus. Example; (Myers & Harry 1948) Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, (Rudiger Riehl and Hans A. Baensch 1991) Papiliochromis ramirezi, (Greg Jennings 2006) Microgeophagus ramirezi, (William Thornton Innes 1966) Apistogramma ramirezi, (Aquarium Fish Magazine) Pseudogeophagus ramirezi, Pseudoapistogramma ramirezi, and Geophagus ramirezi.
Normally zoological or taxonomical classification and naming conventions tend to stick to the oldest (or first described and published) name unless there is scientific proof that the name or classification was incorrect or invalid. Only then should a new name be accepted in place of whatever older names, classifications, or descriptions existed. In this case it seems like Mikrogeophagus ramirezi (Myers & Harry 1948) is still the accepted name for the Ram cichlid as supported by the authoritative FishBase site and their sources.
I like the composition although it might be a little close cropped at the top. The colours are richly natural and the details are superb (especially when considering the smallish size of these fish). The exposure with the fill-in flash worked well and provided good contrasts.
Well done and TFS.
Regards
