Eristalis tenax is a European hoverfly, also known as the drone fly (or "dronefly"). It has been introduced into North America and is widely established there.

The larva of E. tenax, is a rat-tailed maggot. It lives in drainage ditches, pools around manure piles, sewage, and similar places containing water badly polluted with organic matter. The larva likely feeds on the abundant bacteria living in these places.

When fully grown the larva creeps out into drier habitats and seeks a suitable place to pupate. In doing so it sometimes enters buildings, especially barns and basements on farms. The pupa is 10-12 mm long, grey-brown, oval, and retains the long tail; it looks like a tiny mouse.

The adult fly that emerges from the pupa is harmless. It looks somewhat like a drone honey bee, and likely gains some degree of protection from this resemblance to a stinging insect. The adults are called drone flies because of this resemblance. They, like other hover flies, are common visitors to flowers, especially in late summer and autumn, and can be significant pollinators.

In its natural habitat, E. tenax is more of a curiosity than a problem, and the adults are beneficial pollinators. Drone flies have never been implicated as disease vectors and usually do not become a problem provided sewage and manure are not allowed to accumulate in pits, ponds, or streams.

De blinde bij (Eristalis tenax) is een insect uit de familie zweefvliegen (Syrphidae).


Algemeen
Alles aan de Nederlandse naam blinde bij is onjuist; dit insect is ondanks de naam geen bij maar een zweefvlieg, en is al helemaal niet blind. De naam komt waarschijnlijk voort uit het feit dat deze soort wel erg op een bij lijkt, maar niet kan steken. Ook veel andere onschuldige zweefvliegen lijken net als de blinde bij op minder onschuldige soorten zoals wespen, hommels en bijen. Hierdoor aarzelt een predator nog wel eens om aan te vallen in de veronderstelling een bijensteek te voorkomen, dit wordt ook wel mimicry genoemd.

Beschrijving
Het lichaam is bruin met smalle gele dwarsstrepen. De blinde bij heeft een vrij dicht behaarde kop en borststuk, en een lichter behaard achterlijf. Vlak onder het borststuk zitten links en rechts geeloranje, driehoekige vlekken die bij het mannetje het best te zien zijn. Deze zweefvlieg heeft ongeveer dezelfde vorm en kleur als de honingbij (Apis mellifera). Om de gelijkenis nog te versterken, maakt deze soort ook een zoemend geluid tijdens het vliegen, terwijl veel andere zweefvliegen bijna niet te horen zijn. Het verschil is vooral te zien in de vlucht; bijen maken een vrij vloeiende beweging; de blinde bij kan van positie naar positie schieten en blijft regelmatig stil hangen in de lucht. Ook de ogen zijn typisch vlieg-achtig, en de blinde bij mist zowel de kleine voelsprieten als de stuifmeelzakjes die een bij wel heeft. Tenslotte heeft een 'echte' bij twee paar vleugels ipv. twee, maar dat is vaak zeer moeilijk te zien.
