This lovely chap was taken on that beautiful Saturday the 23rd of April 2005 in the Birdspark "Avifauna". A fantastic birdspark.

The ostrich (struthio camelus) is a member of a group of birds known as ratites, that is they are flightless birds without a keel to their breastbone. They are the tallest and heaviest living bird. Most wild ostriches are found in fragmented groups in West, East and South Africa with the majority living in protected game reserves on the east of the continent. They are well adapted to living in dry conditions and are able to survive dehydration of up to 25%. Ostriches have been succesfully domesticated and are now farmed throughout the world, particularly in South Africa, for meat, feathers and leather. The leather goes through a tanning process and is then manufactured into fashion accessories such as boots and bags.

The Ostrich eats almost anything -- mammals, lizards, insects, other birds, fruit, plants, even stones and pieces of metal to aid digestion. Ostrich do not bury their heads in the sand in moments of danger as legend says, but there is still some basis for the myth. Instead of running away, ostrich chicks will often stretch out flat, feigning death.

'Here's lookin' at you Kid". Nice crisp clear, sharp shot of this goofy looking bird. Nice work. Thanks

Hi there. Lovely portrait - maybe a touch light, but not an issue. A beautiful bird and can be very dangerous if you get too close - especially to a mother with chicks. Cheers. Tim

:D I have one of them too.. Mine is just a bit darker. Good head-shot, allthough it might be a bit OE. The details are great.. pin-sharp too :)

I will have to go back.. Itis such a lovely place :D

Funny bird and very funny title! :)

How dare you say "hit me as hard as you can...I can do with the criticism" and then leave me nothing to criticise - not fair! *grin*. Seriously, lovely image Pieter. He looks kinda grouchy, like he has been disturbed from an afternoon nap. Thanks for posting it for us :)

Weer een prachtige kop Pieter.
Op koninginnedag heb ik ooit mijn eerste dertig ponder gevangen. Het was mijn eerste vis en meteen mijn eerste dertig ponder, dus ja ik vier het op een andere manier.
Prachtige foto Pieter, schitterende details, fantastische pov, goede dof, puik werk.

Hello Pieter i like your funny title :-)
you did a great portrait, the sharpness & dof are great, nice colours and light.

Thanks for sharing,

Have a nice day,

Christian

Brilliant sharpness, perfect composition, and I wonder 'What is he thinking?'

So the old "bury your head in the sand" trick is a myth! I always learn something new from you, Pieter! A great capture of this ridiculously silly bird. I took a very similar one some years ago in San Diego and have always treasured it. My only criticism would be that it appears a touch oversharpened; otherwise a perfect POV and fantastic sharpness!

Heel veel dank(!),

Alli

hello:) this is true:D he need it:D great capture:) exellent shot:) I love it:)
