Cynips quercusfolii L. (Fam. Cynipidae, Ord. Hymenoptera)

Development and appearance of the gall: Galls induced by Cynips quercusfolii are found at the lower leaf surface positioned at the middle nerve or stronger side nerves. The number per leaf is one to a few, reaching sizes between 15-25 mm. Gall development begins in july and ends in the late summer.

Life history:Cynips quercusfolii individuals hatching out of these oak galls are allways female. They belong to the the asexual generation and reproduce by parthenogenesis. The descendents from parthogenetic origin have two sexes and grow up in inconspicuous bud-galls on oaks. They form the sexual generation that reproduces sexually. Cynips quercusfolii is cyclically parthenogenetic with a lifecycle involving obligate alteration between a spring sexual generation and a summer/autumn parthenogenetic generation. The asexual generation induces the growth of the oak gall as soon as the oviposition has taken place. The larvae subsist from the galls inner tissue. After pupa state the imagines gnaw a radial escapement towards the epidermis without breaking through it. Still after fall of leaves the adult gallwasp is remaining inside the gall and waiting for a convenient point in time to hatch and produce offspring (October-Feruary).

Hi Gert,

I am learning so much from you about a field I know so little about. Both picture and notes are excellent and fascinating. A wonderful shot of this Gall on the leaf. I would never have known there were wasps inside.

Jane
