Pentatoma rufipes

Size: 11-14mm

Dutch name: Boswants or roodpootboomwants
French name: Punaise des bois ou punaise à pattes rousses

A large brown shieldbug which has orange legs and slightly hooked projections at the front of the pronotum. The pale spot at the tip of the scutellum varies from orange to cream.

This species overwinters as young larvae, which feed mainly on oak. Alder, hazel and other deciduous trees are also used, including apple and cherry. Aduts are partly predatory, feeding on caterpillars and other insects as well as fruits.

New adults may be found from June onwards, surviving until the late autumn, and eggs are laid in August. Adults can sometimes be found in the early spring, suggesting that a secondary breeding cycle may be possible.

Widespread and common in wooded areas, orchads and gardens.

Hi Marie. A good close up of the Shield bug. You have captured the markings so well . fine detail and natural colours. a nice top view. . I cut my headge and put the cuttings in the car to take to the tip i had load of shield bugs in the car for days. Well done TFS. Good notes too.

Hello Mariki,
A fine macro of P. rufipes with fine sharpness and good use of flash to give fine exposure without to much reflection, which results in a good portrait of the species from the dorsal POV.

Hello Marie, this is a very difficult shot of this dark shieldbug against this very light (almost white) background. The exposure would be very difficult, but you have done an excellent job with it. The lighting is very good. Detail is very good on the bug, and he is showing very good colour. This is a very good macro.

Fine capture of a Shield Bug, (presumably, on a stone?) Marie.
Its copper brown colour and details on the entire body are very well captured.

Wat een prachtige naam voor dit insect: roodpootboomwants.
Mooie scherpe opname met prachtige details. De kleuren in de achtergrond zijn niet erg fraai, maar je kunt niet altijd alles hebben. Die van het insect des te beter. Goede compositie.
