Latin name - Ochlodes venatus

This is a common Summer species in the UK. Fast buzzing flight and a penchant for 'bombing' other species that pass through its territory are characteristic.
Possible confusion with Small skipper Thymelicus sylvestris and Essex skipper Thymelicus lineola unlikely due to chequered marks and larger size.

A widespread and often common butterfly. Of the "Golden" Skippers only it and the Silver Spotted Skipper, Hesperia comma, are this large. The latter species has conspicuous silver spots on the underside which venatus lacks. It is fairly early to emerge, following the spring butterflies in early June. This is earlier than most of the other Golden Skippers too which are summer butterflies.

They fly powerfully and are sometimes territorial.

Very nice capture of a skipper, but this is not T. lineola: it is a Large Skipper, Ochlodes venatus (recently re-named to O. sylvanus).

Hi Gert,

No surprise that Ivan identified it. He has even come through with the names of local Arizona birds for me. A lovely macro of this Large Skipper. The details are nothing short of amazing. Wonderful natural colors and I love the pose on the tip of the leaf. Beautiful background and composition.
