Oak Bush Cricket nymph (Neth: boomsprinkhaan) or Southern Oak Bush Cricket (Neth: zuidelijke boomsprinkhaan)?

Oak Bush Cricket

This Bush-cricket is pale green with a pale line running down the centre of the head and thorax and abdoment, which is pale yellow in immature specimens, turning brown in adults. There is a pair of brown smudges on the back of the thorax, each proceeded by a small black spot. There is also a diffuse brown patch over the folded wings about one third of the way along their length. The limbs are an almost translucent pale green. The long ovipositor of the female is upturned with a brown tip.

Behaviour and life history: The Oak Bush-cricket is nocturnal and usually not noticed during the day. At night it becomes active and is attracted to lights and so may be found in houses, on windows and under street and other bright lights. It is rarely seen during the day but can often been found when beating shrubs and lower tree branches. It is almost entirely carnivorous, feeding on smaller invertebrates. Females can often be found on tree trunks looking for suitable egg-laying sites, during late evening. The females lay their eggs in crevices in tree bark. The eggs over winter and the nymphs emerge in June of the folowing year becoming adult in late July or August.

Southern Oak Bush Cricket

Rather new in the Netherlands. The very short wings and the shape of the gently curved ovipositor enable the observer to make a distinction between this species and the closely related Oak Bush Cricket which is fully winged as an adult. Southern Oak Bush Crickets have probably been accidentally imported on vehicles or with plants and have been the subject of several recent articles in the entomological press.

Hi Marie!
The light maybe is not perfect, but again you presented a very nice creature. I like your presentations a lot, they are not very comercial but there is always something interesting to see. The species you present are often very unique, not only in TN gallery. This time is no exception. This nymph of Meconema is probably the only photo of this insect larva in TN gallery!

Another very important PLUS in your presentation is: a note. Always informative and full of interesting details about occurrence, biology and ecology of photographed insect. All togher (photo + note) make such presentation very educational even for someone who works with insect for longer time.
Once again Marie: BRAVO!!! and please keep this style! :>

Hi Marie. You seem to get your share of Insects or is it you notice them more the i do. This is unusual with its clear green body , which you have taken so well with fine detail and natural colours. Not an easy shot against the white wall but you have done well. TFS.
