Hemichroa crocea

French name: Tenthrède rayée de l'aulne
Dutch name: ??

Red alder and occasionally paper birch are attacked. The striped alder sawfly is also found on willow.

Larvae are about 2cm long when fully grown. They have a shiny black head and a yellowish body marked by a dark brown stripe, and two lateral rows of blotches. Adults are medium-sized nondescrip sawflies. Eggs are laid in a row of slits cut on either side of the midrib on the underside of the leaves. Larvae feed gregariously, initially eating holes through the leaf from the underside, giving it a characteristic riddled appearance. Eventually, the entire leaf is consumed except the larger veins. Striped alder sawflies overwinter as prepupae in cocoons in the soil. There are two generations each year.

On the same tree was another sawfly larvae. I have not been able to identify it (see WS). Any help would be welcome.

Hello Marie!

Hard to call this insect a beauty :-) but it is still interesting. Sharp and detailed photo with good, wooden BG. Interesting note too.

Hi Marie

Over the years I have often seen larvae similar to this here in Australia, but never had any idea they were sawfly larvae. Of course they will be differnt species, but at least I know what to start looking for when I find one next, so thanks for that.
Great composition and note

Bonjour Marie-Christine,
Anne
