I took this photo a week ago in a nature reserve.

The Four-spotted Chaser, known in North America as the Four-spotted Skimmer (Libellula quadrimaculata) is a dragonfly of the family Libellulidae found frequently throughout Europe, Asia, and North America.

The adult stage is found between April to early September in the Europe. Larvae have a two year developmental cycle. Adults feed predominantly on mosquitoes, gnats and midges; the larvae feed primarily on other aquatic insect larvae and on tadpoles.

There is a variant form, praenubila Newman, which has exaggerated wing spots. This is believed to be related to water temperatures during larval development, and appears to be more common in Europe than in the Americas.

Habitat
This active Dragonfly mainly lives by ponds, vernal pools, and slow flowing rivers; they are most common in June and July.

Identification
The brown colour and the four spots on the wings make them unmistakable.

Behaviour
The male is considered to be highly aggressive and will defend a given territory from incursions from other males of the species. The male is known to form preferences for prominent perches and will often return to the same perches around the margins of pools and ponds whilst it patrols for intruders. Both sexes are prolific fliers and mating takes place in the air, rather than on perches or amongst the vegetation. The female lays her eggs on floating vegetation. They tend to be easier to approach than Broad-bodied Chasers.

Don't quote me, but I am pretty sure I have never seen this particular variety before and if so, then not in this light. Very good lighting for contrasts and tones..

Hello Peter,
Wonderful capture of L. quadrimaculata, a well-coloured young individual taken from a fine POV to show its features with good clarity against the OOF natural BG.
Time to look for them here now!

Hello Peter,
an outstanding picture of the dragonfly standing out very clearly in spite of the structured but
sufficiently blurred background. This is due to the narrow depth of field by selecting f/5.6.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Peter,

No dragnonflies here yet! I'm not sure I've seen this one before. You captured this one in a fantastic position with the four vertical wings and the horizontal body. The brown and gold colors are wonderful; details of the wings, body and head are excellent. This Chaser jumps out from the blurred background.

Hi Peter,
this dragonfly is so lovely in clarity and sharpness. I loke the view as it gives a special effect, very graphical.
The blurry background allows the wings to be seen in great details.
Well composed and nice presentation.

Foozi

Hallo Peter
Thanks for your kind note left at my marmoset image. It is much appreciated. This image of the Four spotted chaser strongly reminds me of a scene in a merry go round. Why, I really cannot say. In my personal opinion the atmosphere captured surrounding this insect is very jolly and lively. It might be the blurred dried grasses in the background that makes it an ideal backdrop. The insect itself is lovely to look at with great focus and sharpness. Details captured are great, especially the patterns and textures of the glassy almost see through wings. It was lovely to look at this full of life image. Thanks for sharing.
Best regards.
