[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
My quest for finding single trees with a view is something that will probably stick with me for the rest of my life. Where ever I go or what ever I am always on the lookout for that view.

The sheer attraction of a solitary tree with an uncluttered view is hard to describe. It might be the magic of that tree or the untold story of how it became what it is today. All I know is that it is a subject I love to make photos of.

This particular tree was found by sitting behind my desk and search the wonderful world of Google Earth and the photo database of Panoramio. After that it was just a short drive to see it live and wait for the right moment to capture it. Two days ago the sky and weather had a promise for a good sunset and so I took of.

Shortly after I arrived the colors in the sky started to appear. I set up my tripod, attached my 70-200mm lens to my camera, attached the remote control and spirit level to my camera and composed for a future photo.

The spectacle lasted for over half an hour and this was one the last. The only downside to this spot was that I was not alone. I had to share the space with many mosquitoes.

Hi Niek. From your notes i can tell the love you have withis type of pictures. And one you do so well. This picture is so simple but so beautiful at the same time. The colour in the sky with the pink and grey clouds. And the one lone tree which looks like an Oak. Well done TFs.
Nick..

Have a nice weekend.

You are so right. The single, solitary tree is a great attraction.
Whether it is on a hill, plane or just separated from others it raises the same question with me. Why? What is its story? Why waas it left when others were cleared? Why was it the only one to grow there in the place. If I was the tree in that place, what would I be thinking daily? What would I be seeing in the surrounds. What would I feel when people passed by?

When driving I am continually on the outlook for that tree. And like you they are an objective on mine.

I also like three trees.
It is great to know that on the otherside of the world there is a "lone-tree hunter" too.

Cheers Barry

I love the way your tree is consuming its local space.

great landscape, great composition, TFS Ori

Hello Niek,
Wonderful soft palette in this simple yet splendid image. I wish to thank you for the kind comments on my last post, I wish I could find more time to critique, but this time of the year I am quite busy at work, getting ready to go on holidays. There is always a peaceful feeling in your images, thank you Niek.

Hallo Niek,
Wat een prachtfoto. Alleen die boom in de eindeloze vlakte, schitterend. Voor mij was een mooie half bewolkte of blauwe lucht net zo mooi geweest. Buitengewone compositie.
Groet,
Peter

Hi Niek,
classic Bouwen photography here, a deceptively simple shot that due to good forward planning is very effective. As always very well composed with excellent clarity, the colour of the sky is beautiful. I seem to have ebeen chasing promising sunsets that turn out to be rubbish for weeks now...glad you managed to capture one.

Hi Niek

I know how much you love solitary trees and scenes like this so i'm happy that you found one suitable for this :)
You captured the atmosphere here very well and i really really like the clouds here and the subtle tones on them as well as the sky below.
You did well to use your spirit level here since i see that the land does slope a little which could have mislead you otherwise. Yet, this way, the tree looks perfectly vertical.
I also see composition-wise you were a bit constrained (at least for TN) by the agricultural field in the lowest part of the frame. However, i think that might actually give your some great lead-in lines for other photos :)
All-in-all, congrats for escaping the mosquitos and for this lovely post.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Niek,

I understand your love for pictures such as this. I have only found a solitary tree once and that was in Switzerland. Not only is this tree beautiful but the sky is awesome. A perfect combination for a perfect picture - I love the simple beauty of it. I hope the mosquitoes didn't get you too much but this was worth a few bites.

hallo Niek
super foto, een unieke lokatie zo ver en niets er om heen
erge mooie kleuren
groetjes lou

I like your note on Noton's Edicts, Niek, and I like your work here. I'm rather partial to trees against a golden hour landscape myself. There's a simple beauty here. Was it Stevenson who wrote: "I think that I shall never see a poem so lovely as a tree?" No, Google informs me it was Joyce Kilmer. In any case, the poet's point is an apt one. Thanks for your poetry with the camera.

Regards,
Jim

Great shot, Niek! Incredible colors... and the deeper hue of purple comes out of the sky down towards the tree's leaves - impressive! I've had some trouble with my shots not being 'level.' The horizon line seems to dip just a bit as one moves from the tree on the left to the frame's edge on the right - was that by design? Thanks for sharing that photo! I've got a couple more weeks with kids - and then hope to start posting a few again here to improve my skills! - Kelly

[After typing this, I read Horia's comments - that helps explain - I'll have to investigate how a 'spirit level' works]

Hallo Niek
Amazing scene. Simply wonderful subject and colour tones. All is wonderful and the sky looks like a piece of artwork. Terrific mood captured with a beautiful lonesome tree on the horizon. Beautiful sunset with layers of great and soft on the eye colours in the sky. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Hi Niek!
Yes I'm back dabbling in TN once again. I too love the ambience that solitary trees bring to a landscape image and this is a lovely subject tree!
The colours here are quite lovely in the sky, but I'm wondering if a bit more contrast/ detail can be extracted from the clouds?

Your passion for solitary trees as a nature photographer comes through strongly in your note, Niek. I applaude your passion.
This picture more than illustrates what you say in your note: Each solitary tree has a character of its own.
It is a beautiful composition with the earth, solitary tree and the sky combining into a lyrical image.
Well done and TFS.

Helle Niek.

Congratulation for that photography of one tree alone in the plat land. Very good point of view and composition of the photography. The colors are very nice and I like the atmosphere of the photography. The contrast between the tree and the sky is amazing.

Very nice photography, even if the sharpness is not very good: but it was not the objective from that photography.

Well done and thank you for the sharing.

See you soon on treknature for other pictures.

All the best.
