I called him an immigrant, because this bird (Alopochen aegyptianes)was for 15 years not common at all in The Netherlands.
Originally their habitat was the banks of the river Nile. Probably they like it very much in our wet, marshy country, because you see them very often nowadays. Water is essential for these goose-like ducks, and of course we have plenty of that.
I know, this is a somewhat static picure, but it shows the very nice colors of the bird, the characteristic red spot around the eyes and the specific rest position by retracting one leg. |
