Common and widespread. Adults can be seen from mid June to the end of October. The records indicate this is the commonest and most widespread Sympetrum species in Ireland. It does however vary considerably in abundance from year to year. Favoured breeding sites include shallow pools and small lakes. It is a rapid coloniser of newly-created ponds. On the east coast there is evidence of immigration as it is frequently seen on coastal sites that have no suitable breeding areas.

This species is similar to the Ruddy Darter S. sanguineum however in the the Ruddy Darter the males are a deeper red, the abdomen is waisted and the legs are all black. It could also be confused with rarer migrant red Darters such as the Red-veined Darter S. fonscolombii or the Yellow-winged Darter S. flaveolum. However in the former the wing veins are red and in the latter there are extensive yellow patches at the base of the wings. this is a part of a very intresting site http://www.habitas.org.uk/

Common Darter

It's mostley a lowland species found in small shallow pools and sheltered lakes. Rapidly colonises newly created sites. Can tolerate brackish water but avoids heavily shaded, densely vegetated and highly eutrophic sites.

His Flight period is from mid May to November according to locality.

Adult habitat and habits: a highly mobile species. At breeding sites males occupy perches on ground or on low perch and aggressively chase rival males. Unattached females are grasped and is taken to perch for copulation.

Oviposition site and behaviour: oviposition occurs with pair in tandem. Male controls behaviour and site selection when in tandem. Male will hover and drop causing female abdomen to touch water surface. Females will also oviposit alone in flight.

The larvae stay amongst vegetation. Larval development is completed in one year.

Range: southern and central Europe to central Scandinavia, northern Africa, across Asia to Japan. Absent from northern Scandinavia. Recorded throughout Ireland including many offshore islands.

Well I put my helm on for the critique. Ofcoarse it is not perfect, but even not perfect, I like the shot a lot. I hope you like it too.
gr. Jaap

Hi Jaap,
I am always admiring in front of the quality of your macrophotography and this one confirms it well.
All is perfect: composition, contrast, colours, etc.
How do you make to approach so close your subjects without making them fly away?
TFS, cordially,
Jean-Patrick

It's not so far from perfect ;)
The sharpness isn't very good, but I like the POV very much. It makes the photo very interesting.
Overall, great close-up of this red creture.

Hallo Jaap,

Een nieuwe manier van het schrijven van kritieken en een nieuwe manier van punten geven. I am sure you can handle it. :)

POV:4
DOF:3, focus is a wee bit soft.
Composition:5, nice and close.
Details:3
Exposure:4
Colors:4, the red is great but the green could be more vivid.
Note:5, perfect.

Scale 1-5, 5 is the best.

As for the composition; The lines of the grass are fantastic.

Regards,
Pieter

DOF not perfect, but the blurr helps focus on the main focus here, the eyes of course. Beautiful metallic sheen on them, I very much like the composition that really brings them out, both by POV and the BG complementary green colour and lines. Excellent!
Cheers,
Gabi

Pose is excellent, good work, Very good sharpness, details, colours and copmposition. Thanks for sharing

I love the POV and the composition on this one, Jaap. As usual, great details and wonderful colors. I feel that the light pastel green in the background provides a great contrast for the deep red of the dragonfly. Congratulations and TFS. : )

Jaap, I often try such close-ups, but I have not been successful.

I like pov and composition a lot. Excellent colors and blurred bg. Maybe, and just maybe, sharpness could be a little bit better, but that's just my opinion. I like the shot too.

Goedenavond Jaap,
Ik wist eigenlijk niet dat er zo veel verschil van kleuren voorkwamen, maar het is opnieuw gewoon schitterend met de kop vooruit. Het is zeer mooi gedaan Jaap.
Zeer goed gedaan!
John.

Hello Jaap, nice shot here. I like the composition - quite original. This looks like a mature Ruddy Darter to me (Sympetrum sanguineum). The colours could be a little more saturated and there is some overexposure on the stem he is sitting on. The focus is as Pieter says, a wee bit soft.

Congratulations for making an original composition.

Well done.
