The life cycle of a butterfly exists from 4 stages.1. The egg, 2. The larva or caterpillar. 3. The headstock butterfly. 4. A rest stage is always followed by an active stage.
As soon as the small caterpillar has crawled from the egg, it can start with its most important function start, namely, eat and grow. The length of this increase stage differs by type. The caterpillars of most of the types are herbivores and grow very fast.

Within 2 or 3 weeks they are 20 times so long, and 2000 till 3000 times so heavy as they where before. Even the most elastic skin cannot endure such an enormous increase. The caterpillar peels thus a number of times. The body of the caterpillar exists from 13 segments. To the three first body parts behind the head, sit each time 2 udder legs. With those legs, the caterpillar holds its food fast. More to the back sits 5 couples of course legs. This are exactly small suction cups, with that the caterpillar can hold himself to the plant.

At the end of the caterpillar life there takes a transfiguration place: the caterpillar made from himself a cocoon. He made wires of side and wind itself in it. So on this way he forms a cocoon. This cocoon looks forward very hard, but that is it not. If you touch the cocoon just a little, he can burst out.

The duration of the headstock stage varies, of a couple of weeks at some tropical types, and the by us live types up to 9 months, where even the headstock over winters sometimes. During the cocoon period the fabrics and the agencies change of the caterpillar in those of a butterfly. There arisen new characteristics like for example the wings.

While in the cocoon, the caterpillar changes into a butterfly. When the butterfly is ready, it starts to break through the cocoon. First a hole appears. Then the butterfly struggles to come out through the hole. This can take a few hours. In the cocoon the caterpillar is converted to a butterfly. How that goes entirely, it has been not yet entirely confessed. We call this change from egg to butterfly transfiguration. A couple days for the caterpillar ends up, the skin of the headstock becomes transparent. Finally the headstock bursts open... on a morning there will be a butterfly coming out.

this one is the Dutch red admiral. Yesterday during a walk with my wife I saw this beauty. And yes I got it for the lens and I hope you like it.

this is wonderful, the butterfly on this pretty flower, even the hoverfly is sharp enough. The butterfly has a funny nose - (anyway it looks like a nose) and I like the background with the green grass very much.

Hello Jaap, good shot. I like hte composition and the colours are very good. Maybe the whites are a tiny bit bright but not too distracting. Good details and I like the inclusion in the drone fly :-)

het is allemaal atalanta vandaag. Mooie prent Jaap. Geinig met die bij erbij. Het mooiste vind ik de sprieten.
Weet je, voor ik er foto's van maakte had ik ze nooit zo in detail gezien. Soms zijn de insecten in het groot net monsters.

Na doorgaan met schieten. Ik heb nog een hele reeks vlinders öp de plank"

Great image of two attractive insects (charming butterfly and hoverfly) and so fine flower. Excellent scene at whole, impressive POV, superb sharpness and details of the main objects and blurriness of the BG. Colours are great too. Bravo. Perfectly done job.
