Aeshna mixta.
A medium sized hawker flying in late summer to early autumn. It is also called as horsebiter, but that's only a name. They are eating insect such as flying ants.This species may be confused with Aeshna juncea. Feeds mainly in the afternoon and evening. When perched they hang vertically to catch as much sunlight as possible.

The male (above) is brown with blue markings. The female is brown with yellow markings.

yes it's a favourite dragonfly from me. It's also another tribute to Paul. Yes when I made this shot it was very stormy and it was very differcult to take a clear shot with that wind. But I could not resist, on that reason I send the photo of this mating horsbiter in. I hope you like it. I know it is not perfect, but otherwise I like the windy effect. This was taken in raw, then to tiff file, and then to jpeg file.

Hello Jaap, Despite the difficulties you managed a nice shot with great DOF and colors. Good use of flash to bring out the details I see also..I like this POV showing the cross-legged grasp of the rear dragon. Well done.

Yes, it's not very clear and the sharpness isn't perfect, but the photo has amazing look.

Jaap, despite the windy conditions, I like the shot a lot.

It has a great pov and composition.

As for the windy conditions, I do know it must have been difficult to get focus with the Pro1. I know that sometimes focus is a tricky issue with this camera.

Anyway, you did great.

Hi Jaap, wonderful capture and great details to keep the eye busy. Even though the wings are clipped the composition is V good. My only nit would be a few blown high-lights. 7/10 Very well done.
