Historical and modern terminology
"Ape" (Old Eng. apa; Dutch aap; Old Ger. affo; Welsh epa; Old Czech op) is a word of uncertain origin and is possibly an onomatopoetic imitation of animal chatter. The term has a history of rather imprecise usage. Its earliest meaning was a tailless (and therefore exceptionally human-like) non-human primate, but as zoological knowledge developed it became clear that taillessness occurred in a number of different and otherwise unrelated species.

The original usage of "ape" in English may have referred to the baboon, an African monkey. Two tailless species of macaque are commonly named as apes, the Barbary Ape of North Africa (introduced into Gibraltar), Macaca sylvanus, and the Sulawesi Black Ape or Celebes Crested Macaque, M. nigra.

Until a handful of decades ago, humans were thought to be distinctly set apart from the other apes (even from the other great apes), so much so that many people still don't think of the term "apes" to include humans at all. However, it is not considered accurate by many biologists to think of apes in a biological sense without considering humans to be included. The terms "non-human apes" or "non-human great apes" is used with increasing frequency to show the relationship of humans to the other apes while yet talking only about the non-human species.

A group of apes may be referred to as a troop of apes or a shrewdness of apes. Both of these collective nouns seems to be equally common.

This one i took in Rotterdam zoo . it was just a moment, a moment later he was gone .i hope yoe like this funny shot .Greeting Teunie .

Hallo Teuni,

Teunie, the guy seems rather shy.

I like contrast. I also have the feeling he's a little sad...

Hello Teunie
Almost you slipped one past me. Not so easy....
Great original capture of this Crested Celebes macaque - Macaca nigra. He seems to be a very shy one.
Very nice composition with lovely colours and sharp details. The exposure was on the button with perfect lighting and the DOF was excellent.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

PS. Just as a matter of interest. Although Wikipedia calls it an ape, the only real apes are the Bonobos, Chimpanzees, Orang-utans and the Gorillas. Macaques form part of the group of 'Old World monkeys'. If you ever saw the original movie of 'Planet of the Apes' you might recall a scene where the space traveller (can't remember his name) called the old Orang-utan a monkey and he (the ape) nearly threw all his toys out of his cot. He snarled that monkeys are low intelligence, worker class citizens and he (the Orang-utan) was an ape, far advanced and superior to the monkeys. When one look at the zoological divisions of animals then you find that, the old Orang-utan was actually correct in saying so. There are 4 main divisions namely, 1. Primates, 2. Monkeys, 3. Gibbons, and 4. Apes. Anyhow, enjoy your day.

Hi Teunie,
Well composed and I really like the "hide-and-seek" thing going on here. Great detail and exposure in this very unique capture.
Well done!

Hello Teunie,

This is an incredible shot Teunie.
Great composition, very funny and colors are great.
Good POV and BG.
TFS!!!!
Congratulations

Hi Teunie,

funny and well captured character portrait.
Pretty good shot!

If the original data allow more cropping, I think taking away the upper part with the tree might even increase the impact by totally concentrating on that funny Kiekeboe.

Thanks, Teunie. Have a good day!

Best regards,
Peter

What a surprise when we open the thumbail!
Excellent timing, colors, POV and the posture of the
ape, just like he was playing hide and ? like kids do.
Congratulations.

lol what a great pose. Looks like his is trying to hide but can't because of his hairdo. The lighting is a little strange but a good picture.

Humouristic capture. Texture of rocks and subject is very good. Colours are realistic and show that the exposure was right on.

I have done a simple workshop. I wanted to see what the image would look like with the top (branch) removed. Does it give a different feel to the picture? I am not so sure.

Hi Teunie
Funny and interesting picture of that shy monkey. I like its "hair"!:)
