[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The swallowtail butterflies are large, colourful butterflies, which form the family Papilionidae. There are at least 550 species, and though the majority are tropical, members of the family are found on all continents except Antarctica. The family includes the largest butterflies in the world, the birdwing butterflies of Australasia (genus Troides).

Swallowtails differ from all other butterflies in a number of anatomical traits. Most notably, their caterpillars possess a unique organ behind their heads, called the osmeterium. Normally hidden, this forked structure can be everted when the caterpillar is threatened, and used to emit a foul-smelling secretion containing terpenes.

The genera of extant swallowtails are usually classified into three subfamilies, Baroniinae, Parnassiinae and Papilioninae, the latter two being further divided into tribes. An additional subfamily Praepapilioninae, has a single extinct member, known only from a single fossil.

Yesterday I was at the butterfly zoo for trying the canon d350 with the macro lens. Well I must say this is something else as a compact camera for shooting macro's. I must learn to work with it. With the camera and with the lens. I must work with a tripod or monopod thats a fact otherwise you can in a bad light situation never get F20 for the depth. I was in that Zoo and I go back thats another fact. Back to learn to work with this camera because it's not a shoot and ready camera. I hope you like the shot. It was handheld.

Very beautiful, Jaap.
Congratulations to you and your new camera.
Very good colours, and a perfectly chosen DOF to separate the b-fly plus orchids from the BG.
Delightful composition.
The focus however seems to have a little problem,
as the antennae and legs seem to be oversharpened by postwork.
Anyway, a pretty shot from the tropical house.
As for the ID: Did they state exactly which species of swallowtail they have bred?
Interesting, as it does not seem to be our P. machaon.
Thank you! Best regards,
Peter

Hi Jaap,
it's a nice first post from your new camera. Its a bit soft and what I can see is it the camare shaking. 1/80 sec is far to long for handheld with this close-up. But you know that already. Well composed, good POV and nice colours.
Well done, my friend.

Hello Jaap,
Congratulations on your new camera, a nice shot to begin with. I have to say the colours are fantastic and a great result considering it's a hand-held shot. As you say in your note a tripod would be useful to use those smaller apertures, even at f5.6 there is some movement there. I look forward to seeing your future shots with this camera!
Congratulations
Adrian

Hi Jaap,
beautiful composition. The colors and details are amazing. Excellent DOF and great background. A little fuzzy on the buddy but it goes well with its texture. Very nice work.

Hi Japp,
Congrats for your new camera :-)
Great capture for a handheld shot, i like the colors , and the composition. The white flower needs a burn i feel to make it darker , what do you think?

Congrats my friend, this is an excellent butterfly macro! Very nice swallowtail on the Phaleanopsis. I don´t know the ID.
Excellent sharpness, details and great colours. Composition and POV are great too. Thank you for posting.

Hello Jaap

I can see that you have moved up in the SLR-class;-). I am sure that you will enjoy photographing even more now - so welcome on board.

This is a great handheld first attempt with your new macro-lens. Sharpness and dof is very good all over the butterfly and the colours are amzing - I will have to go to our local place for exotic butterflies some day.

Nevertheless I think that you could improve the picture a little by cropping out a little in the top of the picture and use the white flower to close the top. I have made a ws to show you what I mean - hope it is ok.

Hi Jaap
How appropriate. A butterfly on a phalaenopsis orchid, also known as the moth orchid or some has it as the butterfly orchid. I must also comment on your obvious steady hand. Well done.
Congrats with the 350D, I am sure you will grow to like it a lot.
Good composition and POV. Colours are rich and well balanced. Slight over exposure on the orchids, but on the butterfly, the actual subject of focus, the exposure is great.
Very well done and TFS.

Loot

Goedemorgen Jaap,
Beste groeten,
John.

Privet Jaap.
Tamron 90 sharp enough is it is visible in your photo - very juicy on color scale.
Tamron 90 it is the bettest than macro-lenses from Canon (I have no in view of 65 MP-E).
Can be only Voigtlander 125/2.5 Apo Macro gives a picture better. But it is a rarity.

Hi Jaap, this composition is very nice. The butterfly looks great on the flower. It's very nice but my only nit would be that the butterfly could be sharper. Well done.

Hello Jaap,
Nice picture of this beauty. Pity that it is a bit unsharp. The POV and composition are good. I think the white frame doesn't suit the image too well because it melts with the white flowers on the left.
Overall, very good shot!

Beautiful orchid and butterfly Jaap. It does take a lot of practice, but for a first time it isn't too bad. A little soft but good colours. Well odne,

Hi Jaap. This is a lovely image. I think its a tad over-exposed but the wonderful colours and composition make up for it. You are right, macro lenses take some getting used to! Nicely done :)

It is fun to see such a wildly inventive use of shape and texture in a butterfly photo, Jaap! Nice work!

Hi Jaap,

Congrats on the SLR.
Excellent effort on this capture and composition.
Your focus is missed, sometimes the auto focus likes to play abit. I have a picture of an orchid like the one you have.
