Pink Rose Swallowtail

Pachliopta kotzebuea

This swallowtail is completely black on the upper surface of the wings, but is called the “rose” because of the pink-red spots on the wing undersides and on the body. Native to tropical southeast Asia, it is related to our pipevine swallowtail; caterpillars of both eat Dutchman’s pipevine (Aristolochia) plants. Because pipevine plants contain bad-smelling chemicals, this group of swallowtails is sometimes called the “poison feeders.”Okee in this cold days I have to go to my big archive, and I came to this shot. The point of taking the shot was very special and I hope you like it.

Thanks Thijs for the right identity.

I saw some of these at our Butterfly Zoo this week, but they were so hard to catch - they kept fluttering their wings so fast all the time. So my photos were no good!
This is good Jaap, you show her so clearly and her colours are beautiful. TFS

Hello Jaap,
Wow. What a wonderful bfly. Excellent colors, compo and DoF. Only the body is in the shade because of the big wings so it is a bit dark. It would have been nicer if you took the shot when the sun was setting. Of course you couldn't make an appointment. TFS.

Hello Jaap!

Great shot of very interesting butterfly. This one is rather strange - looks like its outer surface of wings is more colorfull then inner one. Good composition and pose, excellent colours and details on insect's body.

Hello Jaap,
Graet DOF, composition, Graet colors, shapness, Well done photo,TFS Kyle

Hello Jaap,
I will honestly say that I think you could done much better on this one.
The exposure really isn't good because you have here some burned out areas as well as some underexposed one (the details on the some black parts of wings seem to be lost). I'm not very sure about composition too, it could've been much stronger.
Anyway, it was a good try. I hope you don't mind my comment, but I really think this is less than you could achieve.

Goedenmorgen Jaap,
John.

Hi Jaap,

pretty shot.
But what kind of story are you telling us in your notes?
Papilio rumanzovia living north of the Alps, in the Netherlands?

???

Could be the butterfly had escaped from a nearby tropical house. Things like that do happen.
That species is from tropical Indo-Australia: Celebes, Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Philippines.

Peter

Hello Jaap
Maybe a spade by a different name is still a spade, but on a scale from 1-10 this one is probably a 5, compared with the quality, impact and beauty of your previous work. I must say, I think Monika, in her straight forward way, was quite right, but for an archive shot you probably knew that when you uploaded.
At least the DOF, colour, and sharpness are good.

Loot

Hi Jaap, nice shot. Lovely looking butterfly. Very nice commposition and good POV. I feel a little more room in front and slightly less behind would have been good. There are also some bright areas and maybe a little overexposed. Well done.

Hi Jaap,
Beautiful colors! The overall composition and framing look great. Nice sharp detail. This looks excellent!

Hi Jaap,
a nice picture but this is not your best.
It was not easy with a dark butterfly and bright lights,
maybe a fill-in flash had helped.
Nice colours and I like POV and the DOF.
Well done, my friend.

Hallo Jaap,

Dit is een prachtshot van een schitterende vlinder
alleen de ID is niet Papilio rumanzovia maar moet zijn (Pachliopta kotzebuea) Pink Rose Swallowtail
http://www.hmns.org/eventDetail.asp?id=9&xml=butterflies.xml&o=/see_do/butterfly_center/butterflies.asp

Hier ben ik ook pas achter gekomen, de Rumanzovia heeft namelijk geen staart en het lijf is zwart
