My father in law turned 70 and we spent a weekend with my inlaws in Drenthe, a province in the northeast of NL. On Sunday we went to one of the best zoos in NL; "Het Noorderdierenpark" in Emmen. It had been rainy and windy all weekend, but Sunday was probably the worst day of all. Luckily there were a lot of indoor activities in the zoo and when we came to our favourite spot (the Baboon rock), the rain had stopped. The monkeys were soaking wet and we took some pictures. Doesn't this fella looks so sad?? He hates being wet!

General info from wikipedia.org:

Most baboons live in hierarchical troops of 5 to 250 animals (50 or so is common), depending on specific circumstances, especially species and time of year. The structure within the troop varies considerably between Hamadryas Baboons and the remaining species, sometimes collectively referred to as savannah baboons. The Hamadryas Baboon has very large groups comprised of many smaller harems (one male with four or so females), to which females from elsewhere in the troop are recruited while still too young to breed. The other baboon species have a more promiscuous structure with a strict dominance hierarchy based on the female matriline. The Hamadryas Baboon group will typically include a younger male, but he will not attempt to mate with the females unless the older male is removed.

The Hamadryas Baboon was a sacred animal to the ancient Egyptians as the attendant of Thoth, and so, is also called the Sacred Baboon. The English word Baboon is thought to derive from that of the Egyptian baboon-god Babi.

Hi Pieter,
The details on the wet fur of this little baboon are just fantastic.
You have captured a great expression.
I can sure relate. We have been drenched in rain relentlessly for a month, and I feel just like him. : P
Thanks for posting. Good to see you. : )

Hello Pieter!
Lovely capture.Details are crisp clear and razorsharp.I liked POV,BG,lighting and composition a lot.Maybe a little more space on left side would be better but this is only my opinion;)Excellent work!Have great weekend!
TFS...:-)

Hi Pieter, great to see you post again, where are you these days?. Fantastic capture I just love this, excellent sharpness and the shallow DOF isolates him nicely. I like the side profile to expose all that spiky fur up his back, pretty much like me making it into work this morning soaking wet and the umbrella mangled. Big smiley from me, well done.

Hoi Pieter mooie foto, meestal hebben we in Nederland geen zin om erop uit te trekken met de camera als het regent maar jij toont ons weer dat het toch een pracht plaatje kan opleveren. Hoop dat je weer regelmatig postings doet. Goed weekend groet reina

Very good quality and very good title you chose to the pictured situation, well done!

Hi Pieter,
He doesn't look very happy, that's for sure! Technically great, detail, colour and DOF are all spot-on, and you've captured a great expression. Really nice shot.

Hi Pieter,
haha, this one is realy a little poor - and we also have rain today. It's such a lovely shot, I love it, thanks. Monkeys are always nice and funny, have you ever been in Appeldoorn in the Monkey-park? I loved my visit there and like to go there this year again. Thanks and bye

Cool shot Pieter!
These little guys can be so expressive..Very sharp and clear, excellent pose and expression captured. Very well done.

Cute little fellow you captured here Pieter. I love the pose and attitude - he/she really looks sad.

Hi Pieter,
This is Outstanding! I love the tight composition and cropping, so all you attention is focused on the Baboon. Very compelling shot. Exposure is superb. Colors and detail are amazing. EXCELLENT WORK!
Scott

Hi Pieter

Great to see a post from you! :-)

He looks cold, wet and utterly miserable. Poor wee thing. Great job tecnically. Excellent composition and DoF. Top shot! :-)

Hello Pieter,

Great to see a posting from you and such a touching moment at that.

Excellent details, colors, POV, and I especially like the reflective mood you have caught him in.

Wonderful image, thank you for sharing it!

Poor fellow Pieter, yes, so he looks so wet and miserable. You show him well - his expression tells us a lot, and his fur looks good all damp and messy - a definite bad-hair day I think. Good shot,
Janice
"Father-in-law" "In-laws" - are you married now?

Pieter, I think this is one of your best photos. Great composition (maybe a little tight) very sharp yet fantastic blurred background. DOf is marvellous. You wouldn't know it was in a zoo because the surroundings all look natural.
Excellent, work, well done. Worth the trip!

Hello Pieter,
Lovely shot! This fellow looks very poor sitting whole wet like that. The picture has great POV and framing. Very goo details too.
VERY WELL DONE!

Hi Pieter, I trust you are keeping well, MF?

This capture shows the creature in a very pathetic mood. It is well captured though. But still sad to watch look at.

Hi Pieter
What a miserable looking primate, drenched to the bone and soaked as a sea sponge. You have captured an exceptional moment and presented it in a great composition for us to enjoy from within our comfortable hot & dry homes.
The colours are splendid and the DOF is spot-on showing excellent details on the monkey. The exposure was perfectly managed.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

It's good to hear that you could be visiting Whipsnade this September.

Pieter, a perfect an amazing photo.

Excellent dof, so that the bg is beautifully blurred. I like sharpness too. Great composition and title.

PS: as for the owl's leg, I guess it's not missing - that's a behavior they have. If you wish, check my today's post; all of them have "missing" legs.

Take care.

Hello Pieter! Very nice capture of this so sad animal! Beautiful sharp details and colours! How are you doing with your site?
Regards!

Hi Pieter, I love the way you've captured the fine detail of the spiky fur on this Baboon. That OOF BG makes sure the fur really stands out too. He does look very thoughtful - maybe he is wondering when he is going to see the sun again (it feels like its been raining here for weeks!) It's a lovely capture (great composition and POV too), well done :)

Perfectly composed and great detail on the soggy fur. He certainly is a dirty one! I like your DOF; the blurred background really focuses on the baboon well.

TFS,

Alli

Saludos... Ricardo

Stirring image Pieter with a very appropriate title.
Excellent DOF and POV, with an exact F4 that allows to appreciate the wet coat with the wonderful effect that produces, without interference of the bottom.
Accurate framing and election of crop of the original.
