Sympetrum vulgatum

Vagrant Darter Dragonfly.
Adults. Adult body about 33–36–39 mm long. Average wingspan 60 mm; hindwings 26–28 mm long.

The eyes dorsally narrowly apposed to dorsally broadly contiguous; brown, or red (or reddish brown). The narrow black band at the base of the frons conspicuously continued for some distance down the inner sides of the eyes.

Thoracic antehumeral stripes present to absent (if detectable, less conspicuous than in some other dragonflies); brown (somewhat paler against the brown thorax). The wings spread more or less horizontally in repose; dissimilar in shape and venation; sessile; very briefly suffused with colour at their bases only. The tinting amber (or saffron). The inner wing venation (reddish-) brown. Discoidal cell divided longitudinally into a conspicuous triangle and supra-triangle. Antenodal veins in the forewings 6–8 (fewer in the hindwings). Pterostigma reddish brown, or red (ruddy, and black edged).

Abdomen linear from a conspicuously swollen base, or swollen both basally and distally and markedly constricted in between; 24–28 mm long; predominantly crimson red (in the male), or green, or yellow (olive-yellow, in the female); plain, or predominantly transversely banded, or complexly patterned (apart from median black dashes on segments 8 and 9 of both sexes, which are characteristic of the genus, males have lateral yellow spots on segments 2 and 3, and narrow yellow bands between the segments); without mid-dorsal spots. The male abdomen without auricles on segment 2; with a single inferior anal appendage.

Nymphs. The nymphs stout, the body expanded in the middle; when mature, 17–18 mm long.

The head in dorsal view markedly narrowing from immediately behind the eyes. The postocular lobes curving smoothly to the back of the head from immediately behind the eyes. The antennae 7 segmented. The mask having the prementum hollowed dorsally. The prementum bearing 28–30 major setae (14+14 to 15+15). The body of the labial palps bearing (10–)11(–12) major setae. Legs longer than the abdomen.

Adults on the wing early July to early September.

Classification. Anisoptera; family Libellulidae.

General comments. Not illustrated. A very rare species, readily distinguishable from S. striolatum by the narrow black band at the base of the frons being continued down the inner sides of the eyes. The nymph has not been recorded in Britain.

the interesting note I found here

This one I try with an experience from me. This male I took it with the canon 350 with the sigma 70-300 macro lens and placed there fore the canon 500d close up lens. Well let me I tell you that I was very surpriced over the result. I took the shot in raw on tv and I like the result I hope you like it to. It was taken with a monopod. It is a tip for people who hate the tripod.

Hi Jaap,
it's a very nice close-up of this lovely dragonfly. The POV and pose are good, lovely colours and good details. The DOF it also nice, the subject standout nicely from the BG.
Maybe you could add a slightly contrast.
Very well done, my freind.

Good capture, Jaap, lovely pose captured, good sharpness and details and nicely oof bg.
Congratulations with your new camera as well :-)

HI Jaap,
it's a wonderful dragonfly and you catched it on a pretty place with good sharpness. I like the light-points in the eyes, very well done.
I also made close-ups with this lens, I think the Makro of this lens is also very good and you don't have to go so close as with the normal Macro-lens. Very good experiment, bye

Hello Jaap , A Very good picture from the dragonfly , Good pose details colours pov and dof ,greetings teunie .

Hello my friend Jaap,
okay this is a great picture. Great sharpness, good details, great POV and composition too. But I think you can make it better. I missing more sharpness, also the contrast and there is no shadow. - Ich will es Dir auf deutsch sagen: das Foto wirkt irgendwie flach - es fehlt an brillianz. Technisch ist es sonst einwandfrei. Sehr gut freigestellt! I hope I can help you my friend.
Gruß
Heinz

Dag Jaap.
Je experiment is met deze foto wel geslaagd. Details zijn prachtig te zien en je hebt een mooie POV gekozen. De kleuren komen op mijn monitor wat hard over maar kan ook aan mij liggen. Goed werk.

Hi Jaap,
Another beauty from you. The DOF here is fantastic, so many of these type of shots lose focus on the wings, this is excellent. Lovely detail and colours, beautiful light in the background too. Just a little noise in the background though.

I think these are excellent results with your custom lens combination, a great idea!
Best regards,
Adrian

Hi Jaap,
Nice results with "experiment" # 2 :)
Great color, detail, DOF, POV and framing mf.
Very well done.

Hi Jaap,
An excellent shot on this Darter. You caught a classic pose. He is very well seperated from the nice OOF backround. Colors and detail look great. Good frame filling composition here.
Very well done!

I find these experiments interesting Jaap as I have always wondered about getting myself the 500 close up lens. I might just do that. Well done my friend.
