Sympetrum vulgatum

Vagrant Darter Dragonfly.
Adults. Adult body about 33–36–39 mm long. Average wingspan 60 mm; hindwings 26–28 mm long.

The eyes dorsally narrowly apposed to dorsally broadly contiguous; brown, or red (or reddish brown). The narrow black band at the base of the frons conspicuously continued for some distance down the inner sides of the eyes.

Thoracic antehumeral stripes present to absent (if detectable, less conspicuous than in some other dragonflies); brown (somewhat paler against the brown thorax). The wings spread more or less horizontally in repose; dissimilar in shape and venation; sessile; very briefly suffused with colour at their bases only. The tinting amber (or saffron). The inner wing venation (reddish-) brown. Discoidal cell divided longitudinally into a conspicuous triangle and supra-triangle. Antenodal veins in the forewings 6–8 (fewer in the hindwings). Pterostigma reddish brown, or red (ruddy, and black edged).

Abdomen linear from a conspicuously swollen base, or swollen both basally and distally and markedly constricted in between; 24–28 mm long; predominantly crimson red (in the male), or green, or yellow (olive-yellow, in the female); plain, or predominantly transversely banded, or complexly patterned (apart from median black dashes on segments 8 and 9 of both sexes, which are characteristic of the genus, males have lateral yellow spots on segments 2 and 3, and narrow yellow bands between the segments); without mid-dorsal spots. The male abdomen without auricles on segment 2; with a single inferior anal appendage.

Nymphs. The nymphs stout, the body expanded in the middle; when mature, 17–18 mm long.

The head in dorsal view markedly narrowing from immediately behind the eyes. The postocular lobes curving smoothly to the back of the head from immediately behind the eyes. The antennae 7 segmented. The mask having the prementum hollowed dorsally. The prementum bearing 28–30 major setae (14+14 to 15+15). The body of the labial palps bearing (10–)11(–12) major setae. Legs longer than the abdomen.

Adults on the wing early July to early September.

Classification. Anisoptera; family Libellulidae.

General comments. Not illustrated. A very rare species, readily distinguishable from S. striolatum by the narrow black band at the base of the frons being continued down the inner sides of the eyes. The nymph has not been recorded in Britain.

the interesting note I found here

This one I try with an experience from me. I took it with the canon 350 with the sigma 70-300 macro lens and placed there fore the canon 500d close up lens. Well let me I tell you that I was very surpriced over the result. I took the shot in raw on tv and I like the result I hope you like it to. It was taken with a monopod and on my birthday. taken with 400asa

Very nice macro, Jaap!
Great details, good lighting (not too strong), i like the tight crop and the POV. Maybe a bit more sharpness wouldn't hurt, but still a succesfull experiment :)
Bravo and TFS

Dag Jaap.
Hele mooie close up, dat je zo nog maar verder mag experimenteren. De details van de kop zijn prachtig te zien, een klein scheerapparaatje zou hem niet misstaan. Prima werk en bedankt.
Gr. hans

Hi Jaap,
Awesome detail in this dramatic closeup.
Very good POV, nice color and good light.
Great job with this "experiment" # 3.

Hello Jaap,
Happy Birthday for July 30! And this is what you're really good at. I'm always amazed by Dragonfly's eyes, they are so 3-dimensional. A great macro shot, great detail and textures, I think the DOF is a little shallow though, evern at f/16. It must be an effect of your close-up lens. Nice work.
Regards,
Adrian

Excellent detail, but really love the different viewpoint.
Well done...

Hello Jaap,

Very good macro of this dragongly! But at f/16 I thought that more of the body should be in focus. But it remains a wonderful close-up! The colors seems very natural too! Great shot and TFS,

Michel

Dag Jaap,
Groeten,
John.

Hi Jaap!
Very succesfull experiment! Extremally close macro, good details and sharpness. I like POV and reflection on its eye. I think it needs shaving :-)

Hello Jaap,
very interesting experiment, that looks quite dramatical and exciting.
Just an idea for further experiments: significantly shorter focal length of optics would provide more depth of field.
Certainly a very pleasing survey of these fascinating details that become visible in super macro.
And, sorry a bit late: happy birthday to you!
Thank you! Best regards,
Peter

this one is great.
have a nice day

Hello Jaap,
This is very close! Maybe a little soft, but still lots of details are visible.
Great job!

Hallo Jaap

Amazing macro, Japp! Thanks for sharing your wonderful shot and the technical tips, too.

The result isn't super-sharp like you might expect on a dedicated macro lens. I guess we shouldn't expect too much of a close-up lens. But I can't really see where the point of focus is on this photo. Keep trying!

Hi Jaap.
Amazing close-up, taken with help of interesting set of lenses. Great magnification ratio, wonderful reproduction of the dragonfly face and its expression. Nice colours and exposure. I welcome any experiment. They enrich both you, and us. My compliments and TFS.
