Hmmm ... what to think of this picture? :)

Well, I just had to upload it as it was the very first picture shot with my digital camera in June 2003. I also wanted to upload a picture of my hometown Enkhuizen; the most beautiful city of The Netherlands. :)

As you all know these birds are Black-headed Gulls (Larus ridibundus) and they are very common in Europe. These Gulls are not really black-headed birds, more chocolate-brown - in fact, for much of the year, it has a white head. It is most definitely not a ‘seagull’ and is found commonly almost anywhere inland. Black-headed gulls are sociable, quarrelsome, noisy birds, usually seen in small groups or flocks, often gathering into larger parties where there is plenty of food, or when they are roosting. They often use the two bridges next to my house as a Landing Zone. My house is like 2 metres away from a (very) small harbour and there are always waterbirds around. Gulls are very common too. I like that, unless my windowcleaner has just visted us.

Critiques [Translate]

What do I think of this image? Well I really like the technicals like focus and exposure and I really love the gulls, but the composition it too busy for my taste. The gulls get lost in all the clutter and my eye keeps getting distracted . I would love to see some Black-headed Gulls in a simpler composition.

the details of the Gulls is fantastic.
The only thing I personally am unsure of is all the distracting points elsewhere in the photo.
Other than that, this is a great shot

I like this photo Pieter. The birds on the wall make a nice composition. Maybe you shold have crop the orange box in the left side. Good colours and sharpness.

Never assume we will know what the subject is. Remeber this is a global audience and chocolate-headed gulls don't occur everywhere.

As the others have said, nice detail on the lead gull, but its messy, to many overlapping elements and the red box on the left and red flowers on the right are horrible.

Pieter, I like the shot. Sometimes I think I really have to learn about photography; I'm telling you this because the scenario was not distubing for me. But, as I said, I'm still a beginner in photography. Therefore, don't take my comments too seriously.

Excellent sharpness, great POV and beautiful birds.

Pieter, I have to disagree with the others about it being too busy. I like the repetition of the red in the plastic box, gulls' feet and the flowers on the far bank. Really great focus and excellent capture!
