[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The common name of this beautiful spider is wasp spider. This spider is, like all orb-weavers, not poisonous for us. The adult female has a shining silvery cephalothorax (head) and a yellowish abdomen with black and white bars across it. The adult female is much larger than the male. The male measures between 4 and 6 mm while the female has a full grown size between 14 - 17 mm.

When the female is loaded with eggs she can become enormous in size. Argiopes can be easily identified by the zigzag of white silk in their webs. Like all orb-weavers, they have ringed legs. The function of the zigzag of white silk in their web is not clear. There are several ideas what the purpose may be. It may be used to attract insects because it is radiating UV-light and that attract insects. Another explanation is that it is to frighten predators. The spider shakes the web vigorously when something large is approaching and that result in a blurry white spot. Another explanation can be that the spider makes the web clear to see and that should avoid large animals to destroy the web.

The just hatched spiders are very small but already have all the features as the adult spiders.

In July the males mate with the females and often loose their life or some legs after their 'duty'.
The female makes a brown cocoon one month after mating and the young spiders hatch the next year in spring. The female dies in the winter.

When the spiders are young the differences between the sexes is not so obvious. But the sexes can be identified by the form of the palps. Like all spiders, the palps of the male are bulbier than the palps of the female.

The spider lives in open grassy areas and makes her web amongst the grass and low herbage. In the Mediterranean she is very common but the last
decennia she is moving up North. She is reported often from Limburg in the South of The Netherlands, around Berlin in Germany and in Great-Britain where she was already reported in 1940. When the spider catches her prey she wraps it very fast in silk. After a lethal bite with venom and protein dissolving enzymes she waits until the prey does not struggle anymore and sucks it empty or hangs the packet in her web to consume it later. If a too large insect gets into her web she bites the threads in which the insect hangs loose of her web until the insect falls out.

This one I took in another experiment of me. the tamron 90mm and the tamron 2x teleconverter, and that it's works you can see here. there was not much light. I used 800 asa and a flash. I hope you like it.

Another sucessfull experiment! The picture is very nice despite the harsh conditions and its quality is great, even though you used such a high ISO.
The POV is interesting, the details are nice, clear and sharp, the lighting is well managed and the colors are beautiful.

An excellent POV of this spider, Jaap.
The details are very clear, and the web is well-shown.
The light seems a bit harsh, but the colors are coming through quite well.

Ik ken heel wat spinnen hier bij ons in de beurt, maar deze zie ik niet bij ons. Ik vind het prachtig hoe u tewerk bent gegaan met de opzet van Tamron, het resultaat mag gezien worden, alle details zijn gewoon fantastisch, samen met de werkelijke kleuren, wat is onze natuur wonderlijk nietwaar!

What's with this psychedelic/fluorescent spider? Very interesting reflections you captured on this beautiful arachnid.

A lovely composition showing clearly the stabilimentum and the design of the web. Excellent colour reproduction and good details are visible almost throughout the entire field of the spider with only the tips of the frontal protruding legs that lack a little in sharpness. The BG is well removed and OOF while the more or less even green colour compliments the spider very well. You’ve managed the exposure rather well and good application of the fill-in flash.

Tones are a little too purple.
Pic should be ratated 180 degres, as the head should point below, and the white thing on the web too.

I'm glad to see this spider in your gallery. It's a lovely species and nice to photograph as well.
The picture is nicely framed and has very good DOF. I really like the colours of BG, but the spiders body has strange blue cast which doesn't look natural.

I wish I ever found a "wasp spider" as imaculate and beautiful as this one.
You captured it with plenty of details and colours, it looks quite a bit too magenta in the reflections, but gives it a very fancy look :)

You must be wondering why I went back to one of your older postings to award my smiley. I just adore the colour purple and your photo "My first wasp spider" jumped into my face, and I could not ignore it. This is a brilliant captured photo with lots of colourful detail and features. Well composed and presented. The blurred background brings out the detail of the spiders web to the foreground and emphasise the dazzling colours of the spider well. Thanks for sharing.

Hallo Jaap,

Een schitterende opname van deze tijgerspin. Scherp, goede POV en achtergrond. Het web is ook zeer goed zichtbaar. Wat mij opvalt is de rood/blauwe zweem bij de spin. Als ik ander foto's van deze soort op TN vergelijk is die niet aanwezig. Dat is jammer. Ik weet niet de oorzaak hiervan. Heb jij er een verklaarbare reden voor??

In ieder geval blijft het een plaatje om de lippen bij af te likken.
