[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I have taken hundreds of squirrel images the last few months, but this one is special since I have never seen before they close the eyes!

This young lady is new to the neighbourhood as one of the boys picked her up as his lady and brought her to the nest just a few days ago. The squirrels were absent for all of September, and now I understand why: They were out in the woods looking for partners!

This girl has just eaten hazelnuts and she is now cleaning her paws, if you look closely you can see the little pink tongue…

This is the time of year when they prepare for winter, for instance by putting on thick fur and ear tufts. Why ear tufts? During summer the ears serve as effective heat exchangers, because the blood vessels are only protected by very thin skin in the ears. In wintertime there is no need for this feature but rather the opposite so the ears are protected by fur that grows out during the autumn weeks.

The newcomers around my place are still a bit reluctant to me, but they have already learned where the hazelnuts can be found…
