Fireweed or (mainly in Britain) Rosebay Willowherb (Epilobium angustifolium) is a perennial herbaceous plant in the willowherb family Onagraceae. It is native throughout the temperate Northern Hemisphere.

This herb is often abundant in wet calcareous to slightly acidic soils in open fields, pastures, and particularly burned-over lands; the name Fireweed derives from the species' abundance as a coloniser on burnt sites after forest fires. Its tendency to quickly colonize open areas with little competition, such as sites of forest fires and forest clearings, makes it a clear example of a pioneer species.

Plants grow and flower as long as there is open space and plenty of light, as trees and brush grow larger the plants die out, but the seeds remain viable in the soil seed bank for many years, when a new fire or other disturbance occurs that opens up the ground to light again the seeds germinate.

Some areas with heavy seed counts in the soil, after burning, can be covered with pure dense stands of this species and when in flower the landscape is turned into fields of colour.

Hi Pablo!

The Fireweed is always so pleasant to look at. It also grows in my region and I even have it in my garden. Your picture reflects the flower's characteristics at best and is held in marvellous colours that correspond to the reality.

Kind regards

Markus

Hallo Pablo
We have been away for 3 weeks and I missed out on some lovely images which is a pity, but this striking Fireweed with its different shades of purple stole my heart in a flash upon browsing through the gallery. It is well photographed and one can see the details very clearly. I like the unopened flowerbuds a lot as it is one of my personal favourite features in an image containing a flower. It is really a pleasure stopping by and appreciate such a lovely image after an absence from the site. Thanks for sharing and best regards.
Anna.
I'll be posting some great images of our Kruger National Park vacation soon.

Hi Pablo,
this lively and lovely presentation of the the purple is so captivating. The sharpness is beyond doubt.
the lone fly really add impact to the shot.
The soft blurry background makes this shot exciting, not forgetting the contribution by the fly.

regards,
Foozi.

Hello Pablo,
A plant I know very well and I also know how difficult it is to make a good picture of it!
Fine composition- The Fireweed is shown with natural colors and from a very well chosen point of view. Very well done.
Kind regards
Anne

I remember well my father talking of this!!! A wonderful and most colourful memory...If TN is anything to me it is memories of my childhood done in new high tech! Thanks Pablo!

Hi Pablo,

The close-up view is showing the details and colors of the fireweed with the insect on it. The subject is well framed. The blurred background is putting in evidence the flower. The afternoon light has a good effect on the colors. have a nice day.

Pierre

Bonjour Pablo,
