Not many black and white images are posted in TrekNature, and I am the first to question nature photographs in this medium…

So I am really curious to see your response to this!

The image is showing Lake Aursunden in Central Norway, source of Norway’s longest river Glomma. The mountains you see in the background are located on the border between Sweden and Norway, and reach an altitude around 1500 m.

This was a dark and rainy Saturday in May this year, and as you see there is still a lot of snow, and the ice on the lake has just started to break up. Spring was late this year...

The B&W fits the mood of the day, and the image was taken from a moving car. I'm adding a workshop image showing more action!

I feel this image makes a fine contrast to my last colourful posting!

Now this I do not hate!
The contrast produced by the B&W is awesome!
I'm amazed how sharp you have managed to get it considering this was taken from a moving car with a shutter speed of just 1/200!
Once again your composition is top-class!
A bit of noise in the dky but I love the effect it gives.
Please don't remove this!
Very well done Pablo,
Joe

Hello Pablo,
I think this landscape in B/W format has it's own beauty in it!
well captured with a good low pov with depth and details in the shot!
you are right, it's really fit the mood on this shot
TFS
cheers
Tony

Hello Pablo !
I like the B-W in this picture, because it makes the picture look grey and a bit sad - really a winter picture. Beautiful atmosphere, I could almost feel the cold when I look at the picture. It is a wonderful landscape, by the way, and you managed to get an excellent picture, given that it was taken from a moving car. Very well done !
Valerie.

Hello Pablo,

No I don't hate it. You have create a good mood. I find the DOF not very well. For a B&W photo must be the sharpness much better (my opinion). Your compo is very good. I think you lose to much in the converting. In any case have to you courage post the photograph Have a nice evening. Regards and TFS BOB

Hi Pablo, fascinating B&W with splendid light, very well done, ciao Silvio

by golly if it doesn't look pretty glum there Pablo. Sometimes black and white works well...Heck I remember the days when it was all I did for many years...I have some nice new filters now...this is a good one though.

Wow Paul, this is a stunning and beautiful scene, it would look so good as a large print. Excellent contrast and light with a great pov from foreground to the mountains on the horizon. My response to this was immediate, which is what good photography and art should do, you don't think or analize just take a breath and say wow. The mood is as serene winter scene and it has a lot of beauty. The perspective leads the eye through the scene. I think you have done a great job, I would love this on my wall.

Hi Pablo

AN interesting shot and posting - from the thumbnail I assumed it was a winter shot that appeared black and white! You have made very good use of the blocks of black and white and the angles they create to make a stimulating shot.

Hi Pablo,
I liked this and WS's creativity. Very original. Excellent composition and well presented. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Pablo,
I'm an old B/w fan of landscapes photography (especially the works of Ansell Adams) to me photos are often enhanced by B/W, and this is no exception, just beautiful, excellent dof, wonderful tones, really stunning location, well done Cheers Rick :)

Hi Pablo,

A dream in B/W.....

Excellent.

hello Pablo,
Interesting to see this landscape in b/wh. The fact that snow is around and creates contrast allows it. I also like the grey tones of the big cloud at the left. I just have the feeling that the black parts are a little too strong. The composition is excellent, like always.
Thanks and best regards
Anne

Hi Pablo!

One of the reasons that we don't see many b&w pictures is certainly the fact that most of us use digital cameras. Only a few people still work on their b&w pictures in their laboratory. Another reason may be the fact that landscapes are not often ideal for b&w. From my point of view, only quiet landscapes with few patterns and subjects are good for b&w. Your picture wants to show patterns and contrasts of bright and dark shapes, good subjects for b&w. From that point of view, your picture is good. I personally think that the contrasts are a bit too harsh, especially the dark tones are too dark. This is an "eternal" discussion in my photoclub where we still have quite a lot of fans of b&w pictures. Some prefer smooth contrasts, some like them very hard. I think it depends on the subject: artistic pictures or pictures of architecture are better in hard contrasts, portraits and landscape in smooth ones.

Hmm, sorry for my English, hope you see what I mean.

Kind regards

Markus

P.S. Why can't I rate this picture?

Hello Pablo,
You are correct that the black and white enhances the mood in this image. The lines created by the receding snow really catches my eye. Thanks Pablo.

Hello Pablo,
Quite frankly, I'm not very keen on b/w in landscape/nature shots unless they're naturally b/w which happens! I'll be honest and say that I don't like this image except for the composition which is very well-planned and beautiful. I love colours!!!
PS I prefer the one in the workshop!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

This is so beautiful. Lovely composition, interesting to see. It's a wonderful shot.

Hi Pablo.
I welcome your experiments and searching. However I think that this combination of strong white and black colours are more suitable for industrial landscapes (views), not for very nice place. My greetings and best wishes.
Yours Alexei.

Hi Pablo, I've got to be honest with you. First off, let me say I'm not normally a fan of black and white. To carry off black and white (IMO) , you either need to want heavy contrasts (heavy in graphics type mode) or the transition between the black and white has to be more subtle to compensate for the lack of colour, i.e. with much more definition in the shadows and highlights areas. This compostion is a good one, but I find the contrasts too heavy for this type of scene. The sharpening has served to enhance these contrasts. If this was your purpose, then you have succeded. When over sharpening, I would suggest you use a mask layer and touch up some of the borders (between the white and dark) with a heavy opacity black brush to allow for an easier transition in these zones (for example on the top of the brush on the left of this shot),

Thanks, John

Hi Pablo,

The black and white is allowing us to see a lot of details of lake Aursundsen and of the mountains. A wonderful picture, thanks for sharing.

Hi Pablo,
I think you B&W option works fine here as you have captured not just the cold and gray view, but the possible effect in the observer. The "noise" on the clouds are a real plus to reinforce the sensation you convey.
Have a warm winter,
José M.

Hello Pablo,

Maybe for you a experimental picture in B&W, not at once my favorite colour.
It landscape is very nice , but the noise and the B&W fits the mood of the day.
I like more of you lovely colour pictures Pablo, this is my honest reply.

Have a nice day,
John.

Hi Pablo. A very good B&W composition of this white snowed in landscape. Remarkable that the black and white looks so good. TFS. Murray.
PS Had 25 degrees today and 30 later this week, global warming is possble.

Hi Pablo,
I do a back and white on TN once in a while. Especially when I feel it fits the purpose. B&W brings out contrast and details much better. I think that Markus explained it perfectly and I second his words. The black does feel a bit too black. But it could be that the colored version had this already as black. I do like the way the patterns of the non snow and snow covered areas seems to contrast each other perfectly. The grain added is a wonderful touch.
TFS,
Niek

My mood today is bleak. I like this photo. I must move in 2 days or less, to where I do not know. So I may or may not be able to use the internet. I do not know. Anyway, nature is nice in bw, but color is such a part of nature, I usually post in color. I like this in bw, has that old feeling to t.

Hello Pablo,
it is a great composition in BW. It is more dramatic as the white gives a special impact on to the land. There is a different effect to the interpretation of the snow here.
Great experiment, that worked out well.

Foozi
