This image is posted to show two characteristics with the red squirrel, namely the ear tufts and front limb pads.

The ear of the squirrel has very thin skin and exposes the blood vessels to the air. During warm summer days this is an advantage as the ears serve as heat exchangers and help to keep the body temperature down.

During wintertime the problem usually is the opposite, to keep the animal warm in temperatures that may go below – 30C in some of the areas where the red squirrel lives. That is why huge ear tufts are developed during the autumn months, making the ears look 2-3 times larger than they actually are!

The ear tufts are shed at the same time as the winter coat goes in spring.

Red squirrels have five toes or fingers on back limbs but only four on front limbs. The squirrel often uses the front limbs as hands, for instance while holding the food they are eating. The thumbs on front feet have developed into pads the animal uses to hold food.

This is a fine close portrait of one of our familiar furry friends.
The use of light makes this shot especially attractive and the head and front paws were taken with excellent sharpness from a great POV.
